Ooma Telo Air 2 is a Wi Fi based home phone setup that works well as a simple landline replacement, especially for households that want multiple handsets, intercom use, and a reliable backup for calls around the house. The service is described as clear and dependable, with long term use, mobile app voicemail access, and compatibility with existing cordless systems. It does depend on Wi Fi and has no battery backup, and monthly fees and taxes can add up beyond the advertised low base price. It fits best when you want a traditional house phone without the old landline bill.

  • The Telo Air 2 can work well for outgoing calls when Wi‑Fi is available, including use from a cabin location.

  • The service can support mobile-device calling, which helps when you want flexibility beyond a fixed home handset.

  • The system can provide clearer voice quality than cell phones for elderly or hearing-impaired users.

  • Voicemail notifications can still arrive on a cell phone even when the hub message light stops working.

  • The setup relies on Wi‑Fi availability and lacks a battery for charging, which can limit use during power or connectivity issues.

  • The service may not include SMS support, so it cannot replace texting features some users expect.

  • Ooma's monthly cost can be higher than the advertised $0 service charge because taxes and fees can bring typical charges to about $6-$9 per month.

  • The value can be questionable for some households because Ooma can cost around $10 per month plus additional fees for premium service.

1-VoIP. I've been using them since June and have not had any issues, and no hidden charges.

Their cheapest is $9 a month. How is that cheaper?

Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? ...
Thanks in advance for any input,
-Topper
I don't know if this will work. You could test it by connecting the cell phone with google voice to the panasonic landline phones and see if google voice will ring through. You could do that before porting over your current landline number to google voice.

Those calling it dumb because you could get a cell phone instead are probably too young to remember having a community phone in the house. This gives us a house line with multiple handsets spread around the house/floors. Have used it plenty of times when the kids aren't answering their cell phones because they're charging or left in the car or whatever. Ring the house. Someone will pick up. Cheap backup, even if you pay the $7/month fees. That line used to be at least $30 when AT&T provided it.

My Ooma Telo hardware finally died last year after running since ~2008. It served its purpose well for the first several years. I switched to exclusively using my cell phone and am glad to be rid of Ooma's rising fees.

are they still charging like $7+ monthly on 911 service and communicatiom fee and tax?
I left them like five years ago because their "just pay fees" bill was up to like $14.00 a month after starting at just $4.xx/mo back in 2013. They said they could get that down to $0.00 for x amount of months to try to retain me, but I was just done with them at that point.

Here. Bought the system ($150, I think) from Costco in 2008, barely picking up though because most of the calls are from marketing.

Sorry, if you want a home phone this is an excellent choice and I would recommend. The rising fees comment is pretty funny in context!

And you can switch the call to another phone, or 2 or more people can be on separate phones, in separate rooms in the house on the same call at the same time, and mine has intercom, so you can talk to someone in a far way room. There are so many things cell phones can't do that landlines can, especially if you live in a house with your partner/family/friends. If you are alone, or live with strangers you rarely interact with, not so many advantages.
