At the time I wanted to buy a heat gun, milwaukee didn't make one. So I bought an $18 amazon knockoff. I've been abusing it ever since, and very happy with it. The batteries provide the battery protection, so I'm not worried about toasting the batteries.

Got a link? Sounds like an acceptable price to stray from the Milwaukee brand.
I have this and it is nice and convenient but definitely not worth even $100 if you compare to even the cheapest harbor freight corded unit. Again it's nice and I do like it but for heat guns I would only recommend cordless if it's an absolute need and even then I'd probably roll the dice on a knock off as suggested by the other user.
tempting as i'm already in the milwaukee system. there's plenty of $20 heat gun you can get from amazon or HB but they do take up a lot of space in your tool box with the gun, cord and that metal plate that act as a stand. Most of the time I only need the gun for a 5min operation so this is a nice convenient factor but is it worth the $100 for that convenient.

Same. Very much an edge case for me as well. In the few times where I needed a heat gun without an outlet nearby, I've used an ecoflow power station.
