Mint Mobile is a low cost T Mobile based option that can deliver solid service, especially for people who want to cut monthly bills without giving up much day to day usability. The deal requires upfront payment for 3, 6, or 12 months, with taxes and fees extra, and the unlimited plan includes up to 20 gigabytes of hotspot plus SD video. The main tradeoffs are possible deprioritization at busy venues, chat only support, and renewal pricing that can rise after the promo term ends. It is a strong value if the network works well in your area and you are comfortable with the prepaid setup.

  • Light data users who want a low monthly bill, because the service can be much cheaper than a major carrier while still working well for everyday use.

  • Drivers and commuters who want to test T-Mobile coverage in their area, because reception can be better or worse by building and location and a free trial can reveal it.

  • People who mostly use Wi‑Fi for data, because a 5GB plan can be enough when cellular data is only needed occasionally.

  • Heavy hotspot users who need a plan with included tethering, because the unlimited option includes up to 20GB of hotspot data.

  • People who need predictable long-term pricing, because the promo rate ends after the first year and renewal pricing can be higher.

  • People who rely on fast data in crowded venues, because the service can be deprioritized when the network is busy.

  • People who want premium carrier extras like bundled streaming perks, because those benefits are not included here.

  • People who need strong support for billing or account problems, because account handling can be chat-only and billing disputes can be difficult to unwind.

Anyone know if you have to Port in or can you grab a new number? I have a backup phone there I wouldn't mind putting service on.

I have t mobile on a legacy plan and we like it a lot. It's probably $45 a month. Is there any reason NOT to switch to one of these cheaper providers? I had straight talk probably 10 years ago and noticed it was randomly slower but that was older tech older networks etc
I'm a former TMO customer and switched to a $15/mo Visible plan. For me, the service is pretty good but not as reliable/fast as TMO, and the CS is pretty much chat only. But I checked TMO's current rates and the advertised plan with Hulu/Netflix is $100/mo. If I had your rate I'd consider staying with TMO, but I'll stick with a cheaper carrier at the current rates.

I have the T-mobile connect $15 plan. It's great if you are on WiFi most of the time like me, because the data is only 5GB. I've never actually hit the limit, but went close a couple times when on vacation and not on hotel or restaurant WiFi.

Be careful! I had Mint on a single line for a year, prepaid for the whole year. When the time to renew came up they had a slightly better deal with more data than my previous plan so I did online chat to renew and get the better deal since the auto renew option wasn't showing it. What I thought was a simple agreed upon transaction turned out to be a nightmare. They somehow ended up charging me on two separate plans (the one I agreed to and another one) concurrently and I ended up with a credit card bill that was 2x what I had expected. It made no sense because why would I sign up for 2 separate plans for one calendar year on one line? On their system the 2x overcharge showed a bill for one year and the excess from the other plan was to be "credit" for future use. Complete fraud. Luckily I had the original e-mail receipt with the price I had agreed to and took screeen shots throughout my conversation online. I contested the credit card charge and got that overturned and then had to file an FCC complaint in order to get them to release my number to port out to another carrier as they had locked me out once I cancelled the credit card charge. Slimy company tactics so be careful and check your credit card bill if you decide to sign up.

With visible I tend to get bad reception indoors... is this normal for them? I'm on their unlimited pro as well:: wondering if mint is any better
Visible uses Verizon's network. Mint uses T-Mobile's network.

Whether reception is better with one than the other in any given building is impossible to know without testing.

But T-Mobile's network has the technical advantage of "owning" more of the airwaves at the lower-frequency bands that are better at penetrating buildings.

Being on Verizon's network often means slow speeds in dense buildings since their slice of the low-frequency spectrum gets crowded more quickly (think 4-lane highway versus 10-lane highway). This is especially true for de-prioritized service (where you are in the slow lanes of the 4-lane highway), though Visible+ and Visible+ Pro are not de-prioritized. IE they have the same priority as Verizon postpaid.

Mint is de-prioritized but you may be better off in the slow lanes of their 10-lane highway than in the fast lanes of Verizon's 4-lane highway.

You might consider looking for a T-Mobile MVNO that does a free trial to see if it's an improvement.
