Photography thread - for Schoob

10,796 659 July 8, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Schoob asked for people to post their photography in a thread.

I'm not a pro, but I take some good photos and I have a sincere passion for photography. Soon, I hope to learn more and take some great photos.

Since Schoob wants to see a thread about photography, here are some good ones that I took of Luray Caverns last weekend.

As you can imagine, it's tough to get good photos in a cave, but this is my favorite view of Dream Lake inside the caverns:

Here's the formation that I think looks like a little resting sherpa carrying his pack. Or, if you look at the back of the formation, it kind of looks like Vlad Dracul.

This is my favorite picture that I took of the Wishing Well:

Here's one of the ceiling of one of the caves:

And one of some contrasting stone:

<--- suffering camera envy Ohmy

many things I just can't do with the Panasonic of mine.

I also don't shoot in RAW, and I generally don't do any post processing at all, at most I'll do some basic color correction. not really sure what I'm doing with post processing, anyway

(somebody clicked on my link above, i had 103 hits yetserday on flickr laugh out loud )

Max, right now I have a f1.8 50mm for my portrait shots. Do you recommend anything better?

Also, just for standard nature shots in general, do you have any recommendations?
The 50 1.8 is a very capable lens for portraits on a lot of cameras. Even though people give it a lot of shit (cheap, plastic, slow to focus, etc.)... If anything I'd invest in a flash for portrait and learn to take it off camera (can be done with a $20 generic cable). Google strobist, awesome tutorial site for taking the flash off the camera.

Nature shots -- tripod, cirular polarizer, neutral density filters, etc. A standard lens works well, a lot of people recommend "ultra wide" for nature, but I don't think it's necessary at all. If you have photoshop/etc. you don't really need a GND filter (graduated neutral density) and can get the same effect from multiple exposures.

Just my 2c.

Love this!

Those are great, I love birds!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this pic. I'm a fan of object art and I would totally buy this photo.

Nice flower photos!!

Very talented people in here. I'm 'trying' to save for a nice camera.
I really like (I think it's called color blocking?) anyway, the photo is in black and white with just one part in color. I'd love to learn how to do that.
Thanks Smilie

It's called selective color, and it's done in post processing (photoshop) most of the time. It can be somewhat done by adjusting the lighting, but it's a lot harder laugh out loud

how did you learn things to do in post processing? and about filters? that's about the level I'm at right now, not that filters matter a ton since I'm not using a dSLR

Google, POTN (photography-on-the-net -- forum), FM (FredMiranda -- forum), and A LOT trail and error.

Post-processing -- sitting and playing with settings until i got what I liked. Start with contrast, saturation and vibrance. Then go to curves and levels. Then move on to move complicated things...
Filters -- needed to stop water and make the sky bluer, that's where i started with ND and CPL filters...

I guess I have an old picture to add to this thread. I was playing around with a different processing method and came up with this: Whee

Thumbup Very nice. I really like the black and white shots of the kids and the color/shading of the flowers. How on Earth did you get that pelican to stand still for the pic? Stick Out Tongue Where did you capture the pic of the Rhino?
