Last I heard they were hooking her son up to an IV and then they would access him after that to see whether or not they were admitting him. according to the doctor he isn't battling the strep well enough and is dehydrated. She sent me a picture of her son and he looked so sad Sadwalk I ended up falling asleep so I didn't get an update after that.

Hey Arj, (and anyone else who might know) I made brown rice a few days ago and it tasted okay but texture wise was a mess. The package said it needed to cook for 35-45 minutes I checked it at 30 minutes and it had no water but was still very hard so I added more water. The burner was almost off. what gives? Do I actually need a rice cooker? No problems cooking white rice.

might have had the heat up to high.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipe...index.html

should be easier than stove top and doesn't require a rice cooker.

I woke up about an hour ago and did some cleaning. The kid is still sleeping. Shocking We didn't get home until the middle of teh night, though and I think he needs the sleep.

When we got to the ER, it was packed with infants and they were pushing them through first. Once we were done waiting in the adult ER waiting room, we got moved to the pediatrics waiting room. Unsure (This part was new to me.)

The nurse was amazing! She had the kid laughing so much (which is something I haven't seen/heard him do all week). Smilie They confirmed that his fever was above 104 and gave him some motrin. The doctor was sweet as can be, too. Just by looking at the kid's lips, he said he was dehydrated. (In the pic I sent to rrg, if you look close enough, the color of his lips matches the color of his red shirt. They were drained and bloody.) They tested him anyway and confirmed it.

They didn't swab him for strep, but went with the previous dr's diagnosis. I was kind of hoping they would swab him and confirm it because, like BG said, mono is often misdiagnosed as strep.

They gave him an IV drip to get him fluids, a steroid shot, an anti-nausea med, and an antibiotic. They also prescribed him a stronger antibiotic to start taking today. After a few hours on the above, the dr came back in and said he could already tell a difference. The kid actually had some color and was saying he was hungry. Smilie

After he finished all of the meds, they discharged him with instructions to come back if his fever goes back up. I checked his fever when we got home and it was 97.1. woot

I'm glad I went because I thought he was getting enough fluids (he was drinking contantly, but I guess the constant high temps negate that). I'm also glad we got this dr because I our room was next to the nurse's station and I heard a nurse and our dr talking. The dr stayed hours after his shift was over so the kid wouldn't have to be admitted. The nurse told the dr that the next dr coming on (in the morning) would have asked that they admit him so he could handle things in the morning. (They don't do over night shifts in pediatrics so the kid would hav ebeen admitted if the dr didn't stay on.)

When we got home, the kid ate a bowl of oatmeal and some cheetos. That's the most he's eaten since Sunday and I was thrilled.

Anyway, that's my book. laugh out loud Thanks for the responses and thanks to those of you that kept me occupied while sitting in the hospital waiting. hug

Thanks! Me, too. hug Smilie

I usually like the quiet time when he sleeps in, but I want him to wake up so I can see how he's feeling. I'm sure that's exactly what he wants to deal with as soon as he gets up. laugh out loud
