Magnet schools emerged in the United States in the 1960s, as a way to deal with the racial and academic segregation in society. They intended to attract students from all races, communities and geographical areas without any discrimination, that is why the metaphor 'magnet school' was coined.
I'm not picking on them, just saying I never heard that term here.
Here, most kids just got put in advanced classes. My nephew was actually so smart, they didn't have any classes advanced enough for him so he attended college classes instead. ( all 4 years of HS..)
My niece is on a full scholarship starting in the fall which would have been 30k+ for her BA in Engineering. Both graduated with "high honors" and were on the "Honor Society". Dontknow
They are both wicked smaaat..nod

I've heard it referred to as "magnet", "selective magnet", or "exam school" in the North.

Right. In this case the group is the "academically superior and intellectual" group.

Keeping reading down the Wiki. This is the more relevant part:
Quote :
Some magnet schools have a competitive entrance process, requiring an entrance examination, interview, or audition. Other magnet schools select all students who apply or use a lottery system, or a system combining some elements of competitive entrance and a lottery.
So depending on the school "magnet" can mean a lot of things these days.

Stuyvesant [wikipedia.org] is one of the more famous magnet schools (for academics) in the North that I'm aware of although it's not in Bawstun. Wink
