I don't think you sound mean at all. There is definitely a point where they have to take responsibility for themselves. Some kids are better at looking forward than others, and I think that some need to learn things the hard way. We are very clear with our kid(s) that at this point, there's no way we could foot the bill for college. Their options are scholarships/grants and working their buckets off. We also will not co-sign for any loan. That's just the way it is, and we let 'em know. We will help in any way we can - but only if they are working hard too.
I've seen too many people do exactly like you said - goof around and just play at school while racking up monstrous debt. My own sister has an ENORMOUS student loan debt and honestly - a degree that isn't really was worth what she'll pay for it. She and her new hubby have something like a combined loan debt of near 90K - and he's going to be starting graduate school and she's thinking about it! She's just graduated this summer with a BA after spending like 10 years in school (and most of them full-time!.) We've also been big on the "no-debt" scenarios with our oldest - showing her where we messed up and how to avoid it. We've done lots of research to check on alternatives for schooling too - so that she knows various options and can plan for it. She's in no way a big planner or super geek, but she's informed enough to know that when time comes if she's not made the proper decisions, well... she'll only have herself to fall back on! We've been doing a lot of discussing about her strengths and weaknesses and what kinds of fields she may enjoy looking into. We've also got some feelers out to find some folks in various jobs that she's expressed an interest in pursuing that could take her under their wings and show her the good, the bad, and the ugly so that she could hopefully have a better idea of the things she likes and wants to do with her life. We're hoping that will help her avoid the "I don't know what I want to be when I grow up" syndrome that a lot of kids go through. I had that problem - but thankfully I didn't play around in school to figure it out. I just went out and worked.
At any rate, college education is so amazingly expensive. I just don't understand it. Thankfully, there are still a lot of fields that examine and value experience, hard work, and teachability as much as (or more so) a college degree. I wish we did better at preparing kids for college too - I don't know why so many get in there and then either never finish or play around so much. You'd think it would be the most serious time of their lives! Sometimes I wonder if the time isn't wasted on a lot of college kids.
Ah well... there's my soapbox moment for the day (hopefully). *laugh*
Breakfast = spicy tea for my sore throat and annoying congestion (hopefully allergies and I have not caught what DH thinks has been a mild sinus infection) and 2 bowls of cocoa rice krispies (so far...) I'm considering toast or something else. I don't know what it is, but I cannot stomach eggs lately. I don't know if it's cuz I've cooked so many of them, or what - but there's no desire for me to eat an egg whatsoever. And I like eggs. *shrug*
I heard my toddler up at 6:40, but my oldest must have pacified her... she's not out of bed yet - and I'm enjoying the quiet.
Flugette - I try not to get whole inserts other than what folks gift me. I am *not* organized enough for that - I end up with piles and they are annoying to me.
I just order the ones I want clipped, and they come in nice piles. I have a binder that I will occasionally put the q's into - this usually ends up mostly long dated, tearpads, and blinkies - unless I'm really motivated some day, and I'll actually put other q's away. I have the baseball card inserts, but I would like something with bigger pockets. Problem is, it would probably mean that I would need at least 2 binders so I haven't gone so far as to change that yet.
I have used a pencil box or shoe box to organize the clipped q's I have by alphabetical order. This works the best for me because I can find the exact q when I want it. I tried to do alphabetical in my binder, but with all the pockets it took too long when I had to move stuff around - so that did not last long at all. (I organize by category in my binder) I do carry my q's in the car with me, but I usually leave the bulk in the car and take what I plan and what I've read may be good deals/clearances in the store with me. I use a little 13 pocket coupon file for that.
My father-in-law keeps telling my hubby and me that we can't have anymore children because we can't afford it, mainly because of college cost.
All righty - gotta head out. Have to get my son's uniform ordered today, which means driving out to the store 30 miles away. Woohoo!!
Have a great day everyone!!
i have a multipocket fabric pencil case i got 75% off at target for coupons i'll be using at target in the next few wks, but not necessarily next trip b/c all depends on what else i'm buying, what's in stock, what time i'm going and if the cashiers are good or not, etc. has 3 pockets and when i get to the store they are all in the front pocket. as i shop they get moved to middle pocket for ones i'm going to use or back pkt for those i'm not using this trip.
i have a dollar spot pocket photo album i got for .25 for extra tq's, the rest of my target q's that i'm waiting for a sale or just not going to use for awhile. in the back are my cvs ecb's and rainchecks that never expire. nice to flip page by page and pull coupons for above pencil case b4 a run.
i have a small accordion folder for h&b from big lots. they used to be a dollar but now they are at least $2! and i sold my extra to bff b4 i knew they raised the price.
for grocery q's, i have an old small nylon coupon holder w/ dividers i bought over 15 yrs ago that they still sell periodically in the coupon circulars from hannah or something like that. i took h&b out of that when i started doing ip's and it wouldn't close.
all these i usually carry in a separate canvas bag i put in the shopping cart b/c it's just too heavy to keep in my bag. i usually do target and supermarket in same trip so i need it all.
at home i have a 7 pkt accordion folder i keep all the coupon circulars by month and pull and clip as i come across the deals. at the beginning of every month, i pull out the earliest month and dump the circulars after checking to see if there are any unexpired q's. then all the months move up a pocket to make room for the new month.
if i got more than 1-2 papers/wk i think i would use a filing box or crate and hanging folders.
When it comes to college, I guess where there's a will there's a way. It would be nice if parents could always pay for their kids education, but that's not always going to happen (for whatever reason).
I think I'm actually organized. You know the weirdest thing... putting my q's together and I think that I actually have more TQ's than MQ's... which is very odd to me. It's also a very small list. LOL. But... that's the way it goes I guess. I'm just going for some basics and stock ups. I'm so tempted to order a bunch of the bic coupons from this weekend. I don't know why, but I have a thing for mechanical pencils. I guess I'll just have to settle for what I have. I can't believe I've already gone through 5 cans of chef boyardee... going to have to pick up some more. I know it's not "good" for you... but man - it's easy.
*sigh* I'm getting hungry already!
Some days... my sister drives me nuts. I posted my low-carb pizza thing on my facebook, and she's all like "oh... aren't you worried that it's all dairy, couldn't you use garbanzo flour (no, I can't...)" blah blah blah... Sheesh. It's not like I'm eating it EVERY STINKING DAY, and it's not like it's some processed crap. She's one of those negative nellies, and normally I can just let it roll off my shoulders because she's just one of those kinds of folks, but it's highly annoying to me today!!! GRRR.
