eh, just some freaky weird deal that has left me more confused than anything.

I was driving to surprise my mom, had my two oldest with me. I stopped and got a 5 hour energy drink cause, well, I'm addicted. It was my third that day. I had taken all 3 within about 4 hours or so. I had to pull over because I got dizzy. But it didn't get better and I started to shake. Thought maybe it was a sugar issue so I drank some coke, made it worse. Drank some kool-aid (only other thing I had in the car) and it didn't help. I had eaten 2 pieces of toast early that morning but figured I'd eat something else. DS had half a peanut butter cookie left so I ate it. Went to drive again and felt REALLY sick. So I turned around thinking I'd just drive back home. It got really bad so I pulled into a Valero that had a restaurant attached. They had me sit in there and gave the kiddo's something to drink to occupy them and I got really confused. I didn't really understand who I was or where I was. They called 911.

How embarassing.

So the EMT guys get there and I am freezing cold, shaking like a leaf, nauseated, can't catch my breath, dizzy, feel like I'm going to pass out or have a seizure, and my speech is slurred. They check my blood sugar and it was 84. Blood pressure was a little high but I was also in distress. My O2 was fine at 99%. Took me and the kids in the waaambulance to some hospital 10 miles away. This entire time I'm still having these episodes. After 3 tries they get an IV in and get fluids going but I still feel like shit.

My heart beat would go from 105 down to 70 and then jump back up, then fall down. They did an EKG but it was normal. All my labs were normal. My blood sugar at the hospital was in the 120's. They said the only explanation they could come up with is caffeine overdose. They gave me a xanax to counteract the anxiety part of it and sent me home.

That was saturday and I am still so dizzy I can't drive. I still feel short of breath at times. I have a hard time talking because I get confused or studder.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with me. I don't have a doctor and can't really afford to have one. *sigh*

Dreem, it is possible that it was more of a reaction to the HFCS/ sugar and not just the caffeine? Though that is a lot of caffeine in a short time on a fairly empty stomache. I have issues at times with hypoglycemic episodes even as a non-diabetic (been tested lots of times) and your reaction sounds a lot like what would happen. Orange juice, peanut butter toast, glucose tablets all work well.hug eta I googled it, no sugar so that isn't it. The company does recommend not drinking more than 2 in one day, and spaced hours apart.

Bargainscout, thank you thank you!! My family adores the Heritage Dr. Pepper and the $1 tq makes it $1.50 this week. Need to stock up.

Jamie - that sounds pretty scary.. I am sorry you have been feeling so bad.. I wouldn't think all that was related to the caffiene, especially the confusion part?? BUT, I do think those energy drinks are really bad for you and I can't believe you drank 3 of them in 4 hoursOMG I wouldn't be surprised if they raised your hear rate, gave you palpitations, raised your BP, made you shake, etc.. but the confusion part is weird to me, unless your blood sugar was low at the time, and maybe it had come up before they did the chemstrip .. and the fact that you are still dizzy is a little strange too..

Can you find a doctor and pay with target VisasWink

Take care of yourself and maybe you just need a few days of rest! You have been running around alot with those trips back and forth to SA..

Yikes Jamie! I'm sure that scared the $hit out of you. It does sound like too much caffeine (I'm a nurse and also *really* susceptible to caffeine). My hubs is addicted to Rockstar and I can drink half of one and have jitters and erratic heart rate. Sometimes it'll affect you weirdly and other times, nothing. I'm glad you're ok! hug

Jamie, did the xanax help? Just thinking that maybe all the caffiene made you jittery maybe heart racing, which in turned caused anxiety which account for the shortness of breath, dizziness, confusion...the more the caffiene affected you the more anxiety and then they just feed off each other. Just a thought.

The xanax helped the "I need to run around the block" but that's it. I still felt like shit.

So this sorta happened before when I was pregnant and I figured it was a sugar issue.

DH just took my blood sugar with a free contour monitor Big Grin I ate about 45 min. ago and it's 69. Is that okay?

well, me too and if you look up caffiene overdose, I had all the signs and sx. However, the half life of caffiene in a normal healthy adult is 4-6 hours. Why am I still exhausted, headache (could be withdraw from caffiene), feel like I can't catch my breath, dizzy 24/7, and nauseated?

Just doesn't feel right. I feel like a freak of nature and I don't know what to do. They checked my thyroid at the hospital but it's a send out so will take 3 days to get back. Since I don't have a doctor she said they'd call if it was abnormal.

well what can I eat to raise it?

All the caffeine talk reminds me of a story.. I had always drank tea and coke my entire life.. As well as eating chocolate and such. Never watched my caffeine intake or thought anything about it.. Started working night shift as soon as I got out of nursing school and stayed on it for 15 years. I never could make myself try coffee even when I was dead tired cause I hated the way it smelled..
Well, a few years ago, my sister was addicted to starbucks, so I thought I would try. I went by and got a tall latte and sipped it on the way home.. By the time I got home, I was shaking and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest. I guess those things have alot more caffeine than I was used to.. I didn't even drink half of it.. But, you can easily build up a tolerance.. I kept trying them over the course of months when we let this college kid live with us. SB was his favorite hang out.. I would go to sit and read.. At one time, I had gotten up to drinking 2-3 of the large venti drinks each dayOMG

Good thing I broke that habit now.. I can't imagine dropping 10-13 dollars a day on coffee.. With SD, I can get a couple of years of coffee for that price.. I am still finishing coffee from the last MH GC deal before last Christmas, and I have SB bagged coffee from the holiday GC deals too...

Yep.. 69 would be okay if it were a fasting result.. but since you just ate not long ago, it should be higher.. What did you eat??

You need to eat something that will keep it up.. Something with some protein too.. If you just grab candy or something sweet.. it initially raises your glucose level, but then it will come crashing back down.. That is one reason when you eat alot of carbohydrates, you feel hungry a couple of hours later.. you get the instant rise, and then a crash.. making you sleepy and stuff too..

Now, as far as the shortness of breath goes.. Do you still feel anxious? Is it a panic attack maybe?
The caffeine would wear off in a few hours, but the effects of the Xanax could be longer acting depending on what your dosage was and how sensitive you are to meds.. It could cause a lingering drowsiness, dizziness and nausea.. Lots of meds do that to me. I once took a Lortab for pain, and was overly tired and dizzy for over 24 hours.. But, that wouldn't explain the shortness of breath...

yep.. that should do the trick..

Dreemedayze - Holy Moly! - I hope you get to feeling better. I love those 5 hour energy drinks as well but occasionally they make me feel just a bit off. Strange like you said symptoms match caffeine overdose but if it truly is just the equivalent of one cup of coffee how could 3 be enough to throw you over the edge?

Below is a link with some of the possible side effects

I know you don't know me, but ER stories freak me out! Back in college, I overdosed on those caffeine pills (accidentally) and had the same reaction. I have panic disorder, but the anxiety from 'holy sh!t, what did I do and why was I so stupid' was different than anxiety triggered by something else.

Take care of yourself hug
