I am helping a friend and I dont have gmail so I dont know how to look
But you get cable internet? Do they offer any kind of VOIP service?
If not, the easiest way I could come up with to get a number that rings at your house would be to get a Skype number [skype.com]. That's pretty easy to do that even the technically challenged can pull it off. That way, at least someone could call you and you could call out. No landline/mobile needed. It's not free but it's pretty low cost.
There's some hardware solutions out there that can turn that Skype service into something that works with any standard phone. Or you can buy a Skype specific handset phone. There's lots of choices or you can do it all via the computer.
The best solution would have been SIP/Google Voice combination which was viable AND free but that gravy train just recently ended.
