Ok - I'm glad he actually did plan something before the actual day. But, I know had my friend not tipped him off he would have forgot. And, anyway I would have been happy just getting to go to Target for my b-day present. (sad...I know).
What causes shrimp to taste bitter or have an "iodine" flavor?
Answer: If you have purchased wild ocean caught shrimp, you can expect a little taste of iodine. The iodine comes from plankton, which is what the shrimp eats.
If the iodine is to strong for you, you can use this recipe to pre soak them before you cook them.
In 1 quart of cold water, add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Then rinse the shrimp off under cold water.

it's just the tiniest bit bitter but almost nobody eats it straight up. you always sweeten it w/ some sort of syrup and then you can't really taste any bitterness. usually tastes like maple syrup in my house

Grass Jelly (Mesona Palustris type) also knows as ?? / ?? (chinese), Cincau Hitam (Indonesian) , Suong Sam / Suong Sao (Vietnamese). It made by boiling the aged and slightly fermented stalks and leaves of Mesona Palustris for several hours with a little starch. It will be in black color liquid and then we cooling it and become a jelly-like consistency. This jelly can be cut into cubes or other forms to mixed with syrup as a refreshing drink or dessert. It's cooling (yin) effect make it best consumed during hot weather or fasting break (buka puasa) for moslem. The jelly itself has a slight bitter taste and a light iodine lavender flavor.

chinese believe some foods are *hot* and some foods are *cool* but nothing to do w/ spicy or the temperature. grass jelly is cooling and you eat it like slippery cubed jello sweetened w/ inverted sugar syrup (i don't know what this is, it comes in packets like ketchup) or maple syrup for dessert or a midafternoon snack. you can also have it over shaved ice w/ some other stuff. it's supposed to balance out all the potato chips, bbq'd food, soda and other not so good for you food you eat in the summertime. watermelon and cucumber are also cool foods.
fyi- peaches, apricots and cherries are *hot* foods so you really have to know what's what.
for convenience, but it's probably not as good for you as the original, it comes in a canned drink-

people either like it or hate it. it is a tiny bit bitter and pretty much no taste. we just drowned it in maple syrup and slurped it down when i was young b/c it's good for you. it is very refreshing when it's hot out.

off to get a snack.
Even though I walked this morning, something musta happened, as I was half way away from home and felt an ouch, between the heel and arch. I can't very well just stop, I had to hobble back home. Got home took off my clothes (dripping wet) and examined right foot. Appears that I have a swelling and I may (been self diagnosing via google) have a strained ligament in my foot. Didn't go to work today, been hobbling around though. Got the bright idea to put my ankle brace on (I broke left ankle playing softball in high school...ended my sports career, but used to wear the brace on unstable ground) and seemed fine, until 2-3 hours later I couldn't feel my toes. So I pulled the brace off. Still hurts. I called work and told them that IF I'm able to walk tomorrow and come to work, I'll need the motorized cart to get in the building and around (we have 4 buildings that are connected to each other). I feel stupid for asking, but it's either stay home or have a cart. Our parking lot to my office is like walking from the parking lot to the back of WM to get milk.
