A $1000 car is not reasonable at all. I wouldn't want my daughter driving a $1000 car at night or on the freeway. Not because of the cost, but because of reliability.

The possibility of having a teen driver in the family is already on my lengthly list of reasons not to have kids.

Why does a teen need their own car when they are still in high school in the first place? If they want it bad enough they should have to work for it.
While its true they don't *need* it, a car is convenient. Going to school everyday for their Jr and Sr years becomes much easier. No need to drop off or pick up. Sure they could take the bus, but around here I wouldn't trust my daughter to be on a public bus. It's just alot of the people that hang around bus stations here aren't the greatest. Could be different in other parts of the country Dontknow

Also, a summer job wouldn't impact their schooling, and they could work full-time. So let's assume a 40-hour work week, at $8 an hour. That's $320, about $300 after taxes. By the end of the summer, they'd be able to afford a $2,000 car easy.
Definitely.

I didn't buy my first car until I had a full-time job and I was well out of high school.

On the contrary, I have very nice cars and ALOT of my time not spent on SD is on other car forums laugh out loud

Not just that, we have work vehicles that are on the cheaper side and they need fixing like every damn month.

See.. I don't think so. If you raised them their whole lives without completely spoiling them, I don't see how a single purchase like a car would completely change them. By the time their 16, they're mindset is either everything is handed to them or their normal people that understand the value of a dollar and that everything is not handed to them. Buy them a car, doesn't have to be new, and make them pay the gas and even chip in for insurance or routine maintenance.

I just see too many teenagers working more and more hours for $8 an hour so they can buy things they want. They neglect school and their studies. Would you rather have your child study and excel in school or waste that time working to buy their $2,000 cars?
I would rather have my child learn the value of a dollar so that they respect the items they choose to spend their hard earned money on.

And, I would venture to guess that most teenagers that are handed a set of keys to their brand new car have also been spoiled throughout their lives.

How we raise our children forms the base of the type of adults they will become. I know I want my children to be hard working and productive adults. I don't want them thinking that expensive things are just given to them. Most people have to earn items like a new car and my children should earn them as well.

Absolutely nobody has to agree with me and I'm not trying to change your mind. It is how I feel that my children should be raised, which will differ from how others think their children should be raised. I'm okay with that Smilie

How does that show ignorance about cars? You really won't get much of a car (much less a safe one) for $1,000. This isn't 1980, which is probably about the last time you could get a remotely good car for $1,000.

Yeah I see where your coming from. I think theres always a balance. A child could learn the value of a dollar without completely depriving them of any luxury in their life.

In my opinion, teenagers don't need brand new cars and it serves no real purpose. Period. But, like I said, that is just the way I feel. They can have a perfectly reliable used car that will serve the same purpose as a brand new car. I see no reason what so ever that they need one that is new off of the lot.

That better include being good with a tire iron when their car breaks down in a rough part of town, if you know what I mean.

I would probably agree. A good used car as a first car is a excellent choice.

Guess they better keep their butt out of the shady parts of town. They must have hookers in safer areas, right Wink
