I purchased a 50" LCD TV around 5 months ago using my Debit Card from my Bank. Got it online and did a local pick up from Wal-Mart. The transaction showed in my account when I made the online order, but a few days later it was gone.

The money was never taken out of my account. I checked that statement period several times. I'm a college student and sometimes my account goes low, so I'm worried the $800 bill will show up one day when i have less that thaT amount in my BANK account. I'm sure they will collect it, but just curiouse if th is has happened to anyone. Wonder if there is some sort of limitation on how long they can wait to collect the money.

Never happened to me but I would suggest you contact the bank to see what happened and go from there. If u have the money now, that way you can call walmart and pay for the TV or set it aside because the last thing you want is some nasty charge sending you into overdraft oblivion.

I try to never buy anything online with my debit card because of things like this. If they do decide to charge you and you have no funds or they screw you for more than the agreed purchase price, you have very little protection as you would have had with a CC. of course, these are not fail proof either.

actually, something similar happened to me a few yrs ago during black friday: i cant remember all details but i do recall that the cashier couldn't process my transaction because of a gift card was involved in the promotion (basically she sucked). she even asked that I come back and pay for the goods if the charge never showed. Like a crazy person, i did (because I wanted to be honest) but the new cashiers had no idea how to process it either. Basically, I got a nice set of knives plus a gift card for free. Not quite a tv but good enough. lol!!

tell your bank you lost your check book and debit account card they'll reissue it and you wont have to worry about it.

I had a similar situation with airline tickets once. I spent $300 to visit family and the charge never actually debited to my account. It's been years, clearly they had some system glitch and I flew for free.

The right thing to do is to contact Wal-Mart and your bank and make sure Wal-Mart gets paid as soon as possible.

The simple thing to remember when using debit cards is this...when you use the card the charge is 'pre-authorized', meaning that the merchant verifies that you have the funds in the account at time of purchase. By them doing this, they hold those funds, which is why you originally saw the purchase. The problem lies within the system. The funds are only held for four days from time of purchase. Thus, after the four days the pre-authorization falls off the account. 99% of the time, merchants will 'post' the transaction, and they then have their money and it is officially out of your account. Sounds like what happened here is that either they lost the slip, or are just too lazy to retrieve the funds. By law, like a physical check, they have up to 6 months to retrieve this amount and post it. So yes, you could be overdrawn if and when these funds come out.

And yes, I work for a bank and see this every week. It's not as unusual as you may think...but now the problem is you never know if or when they will get their money. HTH.
