Sorry, I've been AWOL for a few weeks now. Been so behind on the board its been hard to find the time to catch up.

Was just listening to Talk of the Nation on NPR. They had a speaker talking about bullying and its effects on people into their adult life. It was very interesting and some of the callers and e-mails practically brought me to tears. Some of them might have well been channeling my own feelings and long term effects in life.

I'm a short fair-skinned redhead and was bullied up until college. My mothers advice growing up had been to grin and bear it until the bullies got bored and gave up. Sadly that advice never worked and worse it just reinforced a tendency to not stand up for myself and has led to my being in relationships and jobs where I allow people to walk over me.

It was sad to hear how many others have felt that it has effected them similarly in life.
Im having this problem right now with my DS. A classmate of him keeps on calling him names (the only way I found out was one time, DS told me that his classmate doesn't call him by his name and calls him something else. when I asked more questions, finally found out he is being bullied). My first reaction was to tell my DS to stay away from the kid. Two weeks ago, he came home very upset telling me that this kid stepped on his puppet in school. I told him that maybe he didn't see it but DS insisted that he did it on purpose and even laughed at him. Again, I told him to just stay away from the kid. A day after that, my kid got punched in the eye. That really made me mad. I went over to the teacher and to let her know what is going on. The teacher says she is not surprised and that the kid has been having "issues" in school. I feel bad for my son and worries about him a lot. He is very young to fully understand what is going on but I keep on praying that this doesn't affect him later on in life.

Thank you for sharing. I have always told my son to just walk away but sometimes im torn. I keep on thinking that I should actually teach him to stand up for himself and not let this kid do this to him but I don't want him to get in trouble in school as well. He is a sweet kid who wakes up every morning looking forward to going to school and I don't want that to change for him just because someone in school makes life difficult for him. Im hoping and praying it doesn't get worse.

Dazzled, I knew my kids' BK habit would come in handy one of these days. I have one of those dino toys unopened on the table so I know I have the TQ. Smilie

Thrifteh, oh goodness that is scary! hug I'm glad you are all ok. We still have a carbon monoxide detector plugged in and we don't even have gas heat any longer! It's an ingrained habit.

I understand your concern. My son attends a Christian School with very strict guidelines on conduct and I worry about how he may be reprimanded for standing up for himself. However, it is FAR more important that children do learn to stand up for themselves rather than learning to just lie down and take it.

There is a fine line between standing up for oneself and becoming no better than the bully but it is one that MUST be found or the child risks growing up always letting people walk over and or past them in both the work place and in relationships.

I have found that despite a high IQ and a masters degree in computer programming, I just never learned to take the risk and put myself out there instead I work a dead end low paying bookkeeping job in a work environment that few other women would ever put up with for a day much less years. When ever I think of standing up to the situation at work or leaving it I find myself listening to all the possible nay-saying voices in my head telling me why I shouldn't. I reason to myself I'm just able to see and understand other viewpoints than my own but in reality my behavior serves more to paralyze me in making decisions or changes in my own life.

After listening to the program I found this is very common with those that grew up putting up with bullying rather than standing up to it. We tend to stand back and allow others to move up the corporate ladder as well as coping with bad relationships rather than working to fix or leave them.

Thanks everyone, we're all alright. Utility company came out and checked furnace, water heater and stove and no leaks. My best guess is the wood burning stove that we have. J must have closed the damper on the flue a little more than normal and the fire in the stove was burning inadequately. By the time I got the kids to my SILs (near Mini Thrift's school) the whole house was reading at 0 again. J had opened all the windows immediately...but with it being in the 20's this morning, we high tailed it.

Kinda threw a wrench in my shopping today. Annoyed Oh and to top it all off...I spilled 1/2 a bottle of vitamin water on an envelope of clipped MQs and TQs...and this envie was bulging! I just got done drying them off and they are a little crunchy but still usable. Today is not my day! Roll

I was bullied and tormented all through school- elementary school through college. There is a very good reason why I work from home and don't like to be around people or get close to people (emotionally or physically). That crap left a lasting effect on me. When all these suicides of bullied gay teens came to light, I understood that way too much. I'm not gay, but damnit if I don't know what it's like to do whatever you can do escape it.
