dia... meant to say, on the buche de noel, my recipe uses dark rum in the cake batter... but regardless of whether it is dark rum, brandy, or grand marnier, if you are using it *in the cake batter* rather than the icing, the alcohol will evaporate during cooking. so all that will be left will be the concentrated sharp orange/rum/brandy flavor. but the alcohol content will be gone. so you should be okay following your recipe.

also, most recipes i have seen only call for about 2 tbsps of whichever alcohol. it is a very small amount and so you should be okay.

sending prayers and positive energy for a speedy recovery for your father.

Good afternoon peeps!

I had a wonderful few days away with my DH, but boy was I ready to come home. Missed my DD so much. Can't believe it was the first time I ever left her. SHe was fine, but I missed those morning snuggles. I came home to find she has a nasty cold. Woke me up bright and early this morning coughing.. But we snuggled in the bed awhile and she went back to sleep.. She is still sleepingOMG I guess she didn't rest as well when grandma was here with her.

I tell ya that you guys have gotten me spoiled and ruined my taste buds.. I took some starbucks bagged coffee I had, along with some coffee filters to use in the cabin.. but, I never could make a good cup of coffee.. I think I am just totally spoiled to the Keurig now... First pot I made was too weak.. second pot was too strong. I heart waking up this morning and firing up my machine.. My DH even told me to just buy another machine while we were away LMAO crazy man.. No way was I gonna do that for a 3 day trip.
Also, this was our first trip away since getting into SD and I could tell it was different. I really had no desire to shop in the outlet malls. We used to love to go there. I told him I now knew the deals weren't near as good as what I could get with coupon deals and overage.. We did splurge money wise and went to one nice dinner out and saw several of the shows and dinner shows. It was a nice time!

Now, back to reality! My kids have final exams this week, then we break for Christmas! I love break time.. We get to bake together, wrap gifts, watch movies, etc..
And I gotta finish my SS gift and get it in the mail woot

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words about my cake! I feel almost bad, because while this cake looks like a million bucks, it is seriously very easy. I used the Pampered Chef batter bowl (did someone on here give me that idea?? I think they did...) for the dress part, but it didn't really rise enough, so we had two round layers on the bottom. Barbie is a tall doll!! As it was, I had to create a bustle effect because her hips were still sticking out of the top.

And slowtech (or was it getgreen?), someone actually asked me if that was my business, making those cakes! She would probably have ordered one on the spot if I had said yes. But making it for my family and making it for someone else (with far more critical eyes!) are two very different things. However, there would be a pretty solid market for it, I'm sure, as long as you had good marketing/advertising. From the stares/gasps/fingers pointed/etc that followed me throughout Chuck E Cheese, I gathered that no one had seen such a cake before. Wink

So ... what are we buying this week at the big T? I haven't seen an ad yet. I saw someone mention Starbucks gc deal, that shows a little promise.

hey you guys... in case some of you need towels bounce and not from T, there is an awesome deal on ralph lauren towels at Horchow. horchow is the home goods catalog division of nieman marcus.

HD thread here.

the towels are on sale, plus there is a $50 off on a $100 purchase code and a free shipping code. rush over if you want em. you can get enough for a whole house set for 50 bucks!!

also, using those 2 codes, there are some good gets. for example, if anyone is looking to get a wood salad bowl:

horchow has a nambe yaro wood salad bowl set -- the big bowl, four small bowls, and the servers for 130... then take off 50... so 80 bucks plus tax. that entire big set is going for about 190 bucks on amazon. and the four small bowls themselves go for 60 bucks as a set. so this is a very special gift for a gourmet cook or for yourself. i've been eyeing those bowls elsewhere for so long. and really tempted to get em, but it just ain't in the cards right now and i know that will mess things up.

both e b a t e s and mr r e b a t e s have 3% cashback and a $5 signup bonus.

hurry if you want either. or anything else for that matter.

flug... i know you feel that you couldn't do it professionally, BUT just want to put this bug in your ear:
remember that thing we were all talking about a few days ago about coincidences and a greater spirit looking after us and how things come our way... Big Grin

just sayin', girlie... chuck e cheese birthdays and you. you could have a thing going there. honestly. mutual word of mouth advertisements. mutual discounts. you just never know.

there is a company in maine that makes these most amazing whoopie pies (they're not pies at all for you southerners. it's a new england thing: two chocolate cake disks with a marshmallow creme in between them, as a big gooey delectable sandwich). well you get whoopie pies all over new england in convenience stores and gas stations wrapped in saran wrap. they're usually super sweet, and the cake is dry and greasy at the same time. ick.
not these ones. it all started with one woman, who had left her job to become a stay at home mom. she used to make whoopie pies at home, and family always said oooh you should make these professionally. and she always laughed them off saying huh, they're just my homemade imperfect things. well they were down to just her DH's salary, when her young son asked for a bike. so using her working toaster oven (!!!) she made 3 shell tops at a time. then 3 shell bottoms. and that way she'd put together a dozen or so whoopies in a basket and sell to the neighborhood stores. she was only looking to buy a bike to ride with her son, but instead the whoopie pies took off. now she has a multimillion dollar company, 2 stores, a nationwide shipping business. her whoopie pies have been on oprah's favorite things, on ellen's show, on food network, on tv shows around the region, and picked up by the bellagio in vegas for their turndown service for valentine's day.
... she still cooks and works in the factory kitchen. as do her kids and her husband and her brother. the whoopie pies are to.die.for.
so don't knock your cinderalla, girlie. you just never know what she has in store for you. Big Grin

I am hearting the Hallmark $10 q. So much good stuff there, and there's different stuff at each stores. My dd had played with these [amazon.com] elsewhere and I've been wanting to get some for her since she likes them so much. There were two different sets for $12.95/ea. at one of the Hallmark stores, so $2.95 after $10 q for a really good toy. Amazon had a good sale on a couple of the sets Friday too so I bought a couple of those as well and MIL is buying them all from me to give dd for Christmas woot Been giving my dh the occasional q to use too Teehee

I have no real desire to shop or spend money....at Target or elsewhere....besides finishing up the small amt. of Christmas shopping I have left. Dontknow Will have to go out in the next couple of days because we'll need milk. I have a love-hate relationship with all the crowds this month. I do want to get plenty of Philly cream cheese @ T. this week. Guess I'm gonna have to go out for that laugh out loud
