This reminds me of something i wanted to ask you guys...i got a bill from debt collection agency for $200 for a doctor visit and some test I underwent in Aug 2009..yes Aug 2009...I don't remember if I paid the bill or not but I called the doctor's place and they said "we sent you a bill once but it was returned back because of wrong address" and the address she had on file is the right one Dontknow...What should i do- pay, not pay, call the debt guy and speak to them...
Quote from Dazzledby5 :
If it is already in collections, then it is no longer something the Doc can handle but if you are going to pay it, then make a deal, in writing that you will pay in full (or any amount you want 50%) if they agree to remove it from your credit report. I know is that it will stay on your record for 7 years from the last date you had contact with them before you can get it removed EVEN if you pay it, you need to have a contract to remove it. And if they don't agree to that then what is the incentive for you to pay it? They are tarnishing you credit and will continue to if you pay it in full so why be out $200 and STILL have a bad report?

OMG OMG OMG OMFG! Is it your first time? Do you have the next book lined up? cause you will NEED it! once you put Twilight down.

MOT2, whatever you do DO NOT call the collection agency.

1.medical bills do not necessarily affect your credit rating like other unpaid debt. many hospitals don't even report it. if they do, how they are handled varies. some credit reporting agencies don't put them on/are very lenient. others do. if a collection agency reports it, it shows up, but it is then up to the lender how to interpret it. most lenders give medical bills very low priority so they don't have as big an impact on your borrowing ability or credit history. creditors won't tell you that and will try to push you, so it is something to remember. i'm not suggesting skipping out on your medical bills. but if any of you find yourself in a tough spot and have to pick between getting meds and paying past medical bills, don't buy into those threats.

2. with any debt at all, as dazzled explained, it's a 7 year clock and every time you take any action at all on the debt, it resets the clock. EEK! don't fall for that. stay away from the collection agency.

3. most agencies buy your account for pennies then tack on tons of fees to it to make a killing out of you under threats of ruining your credit. it's legal robbery. look at your records and figure out what the outstanding bill really was, so if you end up at a negotiating point, you are armed. typically as the 7 year clock winds down, you will get offers to settle for 50%, 40%, 30% or less, because they are on the losing end and want to get something. most of us want to honestly pay anything we owe. so if that is the case, it is in your interest to wait till the end, unfortunately. otherwise, if you settle and they close out the account sooner, it will still sit on your history for years as a settlement.

4. in the case of the hospital bill, if you paid it, there has got to be a record somewhere: in your credit card statements, in your bank statements if you paid with a debit card or with a check. go look those up for the past couple of years and find proof of payment.
then you can do one of the following, with your credit report:

Dispute the bill as a clerical error with the credit reporting agency
Explain the bill with a consumer statement that the credit reporting agency will attach to your credit report

that will keep you away from the collection agency clock but still protect your credit report.

as for dreeme... dazzled is right. you can report that creditor. that was harrassment, and there are serious fines for that.

I feel much better than Sunday. Sunday was terrible, sore throat, chills, TMJ kicking back in. I'm still taking the Zicam, at least thru tomorrow. May venture out some tomorrow and go shopping. Will either have to go early or late, as niece has a ballgame I can watch online.

What self-righteous B******s. Staying at home w/ my kids has been the most difficult job I've ever had, engineering included. And I often say so. But you know what - I don't like people. I love staying at home. I don't have to deal with people nor office politics. I did try to return to work when my baby got into kindergarten. Didn't work. Since they both have ASDs, I was having to go to the school all the time. AAMOF, I have 1 at home with me today.

I'm in awe of you all that home school. No way do I have the cajones for that. Y'all rock. Rock
Iagree

not only is being a sahm a difficult job, it's the most important job a person can do IMO. I remember when mine were born my mother telling me "teri, if you have to work to provide a roof and food, then do so...if you want to work to have a nicer car and better clothes, think twice about whats really important." She told me that no one can love and nuture your children like their own parents, and I took her advice. I stayed home with them until they were older, then I went back to work.

I have always admired homeschoolers. Takes a special person to do it.

Iagree mostly. I used shampoo on my girls before toddler aged, but they have TONS of hair, so maybe that is the difference. I have NEVER used powder. Just saw no use for it.

Just don't buy ANY baby oil if they injest it, it coats their lungs with oil and they can't breathe ,suffocate to death ,nothing can be done fo them. Just a head's up, that's not widely known.
