They do that with all the purses!
When we were still dating, he bought a house. He then bumped his withholdings up to 4 (whereas they were previously set at 1) because buying a house was going to give him credits (or something) and he was told for the rest of the year to bump up the withholdings so he didn't seriously overpay taxes (and get a huge return). He did that, and when filing his 2007 returns (in 2008) he ended up getting money back, and all was right with the world.
We got married in 2008, and when we filed 2008 returns, we realized that he had left his withholdings set to 4 for the entire year. We owed $9-10k, depending on if we filed together or separately. Luckily, that's the year I had my surgery and we were able to claim the medical loan we took out as a medical expense. So 2008 returns ended up costing us less than $1k, and I instructed DH to change his withholdings back down to 1 where they belong since we were now married and it wasn't "the year of the new house" anymore. He agreed. For the record, I have always just claimed 1.
Fast forward to filing 2009 returns (in 2010) and we owe something like $7k. That's because DH never adjusted his withholdings, even after he said he would. I can't do it for him you know, and it seriously pissed me off that he would rather just pay one large bill at the end of the year. I told him if he does it again he gets the couch for a month, and I was freaking serious. Paying that kind of bill to the government is just ridiculous! Lower your withholdings, take home what you should take home each month, and don't pay so much come tax season!
In March of 2010 he came home and told me he'd changed his tax withholdings. Yay.
2 weeks ago, he asked for my tax forms and I gave them to him. Yesterday the tax forms are still in this nice little pile waiting to be input into Turbo Tax to find out how our 2010 returns are going to shake down.
I ask why he isn't eager to file our taxes and find out how much we get back. He says he's just not too eager to find out how much we owe.
He says he never changed his withholdings.
Last year it pissed me off, but this year I'm farking livid. We go to Vegas in 10 days, and we've got a huge debt to the government to pay.
I'm going to buy a new Coach purse, matching wallet, makeup case, and maybe even a $50 Coach keychain. Because I can. Because my husband is a lazy bastard.
We didn't owe a whole lot, about $300 this year compared to about $800 last year. Last year we noticed that I had 1 and DH had 1, so I changed mine to 0. This year DH will change his to 0 as well to avoid paying anything. We also went into a higher tax bracket, FTL.
They do that with all the purses!
