Of course they are. As I watched it my supervisor came by and I said "better that a few boats get capsized and float away rather than it be people. The force of that water is astounding. Remember that model that was stuck clinging to a tree in the Sumatra tsunami? That water crushed all of the bones in her pelvis and legs.

Here are some really scary stats I just read:
The quake hit at 2:46 p.m. local time in Japan, and lasted an astonishing five minutes. To put that in perspective, the devastating earthquake in Northridge, Calif., in 1994 lasted just six seconds.

....causing a 23-foot tsunami

There are also reports of a missing train full of dozens of commuters in the earthquake region and a boat ripped from the docks of Miyagi with 80 workers on board being swept out to sea in the tsunami.

i am speechless after viewing this video.
It is just humbling. That's all I can say. It's so scary to know that everything we build can just be washed away in an instant like this. It's terrifying.

The country's nuclear safety agency says pressure inside the reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant has risen to 1.5 times the level considered normal. To reduce the pressure, slightly radioactive vapour will be released.

no need to panic… they are doing that so that they dont have a cherynoble… there is slightly radioactive material in your smoke detector (well i think they changed it now but there use to be)

if i understood correctly, the main power is off and the diesel backup went offline so they are on battery power which can go for DAYS but because they are down to the final "emergency backup" until the navy is able to airlift what they need into the reactors they are taking serious measures to ensure that if there are any problems they will be minimal

Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) right...cuz the authorities know what is in the best interest for public consumption, to keep it as calm as possible

come on, even in the u.s. after 9/11, authorities made claims of how the debris plumes/smoke were ok, and safe enough to not evacuate...of course, common sense would indicate otherwise. now folks have directly related health conditions

and they don't want another pr disaster like chernobyl

i agree they would try to keep people calm but i honestly believe that if there were a real danger they would issue a shelter in place

You're right, they should probably just let the pressure continue to build and hope it doesn't explode.
