Which version of the hardware is it? The later versions were crippled with too little memory, and don't work well with DD-WRT.

You need to know which revision it is. That's what I used DD-WRT on, mine was a V5. It was a useless hunk of crap out of the box, but with DD-WRT, I used it for... I think it was five or six years before it died. Had to reboot it once in a while (maybe quarterly?).

Which version doesn't work? I will ask the guy which version it is when he gets back to me. He only wants $30 for it.

v6 and v7 hardware was "iffy" at best. I think there's a DD-WRT mini build for v6, but don't know too much about v7.

The best model of the trusty old WRT54G was the WRT54GL, which came with plenty of memory and was built specifically for open source builds like DD-WRT and OpenWRT.

You slacker [dd-wrt.com] Harhar
Looks like if it's specifically a WRT54G and not a G[something], they should all work except V7.
Is there a specific reason you want this one? I paid $17 (new) for my Asus RT-G32, thinking it would just be a temporary thing until I found a better router. I finally bought the RT-N16 last year, and still haven't plugged it in laugh out loud
Looks like that's discontinued, but NewEgg has another Asus router that's $27.

Anything v5 and over of the WRT54G requires a "micro" build, which severely limits what you can do.
The router database isn't always definitively correct, but this page [dd-wrt.com] is what I referenced.

Not slacking. I just can't get to any of the links i get when I google because of Websense. Annoyed

I just want to have 3 or 4 routers running tomato and dd-wrt to increase security. I'm also going to be setting up a proxy chain hopefully.

I don't know if I understand exactly how you're looking to secure things by running more routers.

That's one of the ones I currently have. i haven't looked at that version number to see if i can do dd-wrt on it yet. apparently it only works on version 7, but i have to get a ladder to get to the router to see which one it is.

Each router will have a more complex and convoluted routing table. Coupled with various virtual machines and dead-ends it will make portscanning a nightmare. Routers connected to other routers connected to a server with 100 small virtualized linux OSes with apache activity on all common ports. Then one laptop that is connected to an offshore VPN using a non-common port for browsing, tunneling through this VPN using Tor.
