8,038 649 March 25, 2011 at 07:56 PM in Question
Just wondering approximately how much cash people keep on hand in the event of an emergency…

not talking about the 20 behind your drivers liscense…

i am referring to the money burried in your sock drawer, under your mattress, in a box in the back yard etc..

they money you keep on hand for the earthquake, flood, riot, hurricane, etc…

I am refreshing my emergency supplies and just am not sure if I have enough cash on hand (yes I am making sure i have it in smaller bills so i can make change in the event others cant)

Indeed. Good thing simply being prepared per FEMA's advice is not irrational.

I'd suggest you go look up some of the crazy shit that went down during Katrina. Unless you like to keep burying your head in the sand. Whatever works for you. Smilie

I don't think they are legal in California, but if you can, a collapsible stock might come in handy too. That would allow you to adjust the length of the buttstock to a comfortable length for you, your wife, even your kids when they get old enough.
what's not legal in CA?

Please show me information about an earthquake occurring within 50 miles of where I currently live that has ever happened that would render me unable to obtain money from the bank, food from the store, driving somewhere in my car, and no running water. I'd be very curious to know. laugh out loud

So, you're unwilling to put aside three days' worth of supplies... simply because you feel you're untouchable?

laugh out loud

Ooookay. I don't see why someone couldn't just take a few simple precautions... It's not like you're building a freaking bunker or something.

Collapsible buttstocks on long guns.

Collapsible buttstock:
Fixed buttstock:
Compare the buttstocks (the part that goes against your shoulder) above (ignore the color difference). With the collapsible one you can shorten or lengthen it to fit your arm length better. If I'm not mistaken, collapsible stocks are illegal in CA, so you'll be required to get a fixed stock.

I think that's only combined with certain other features, like a pistol grip and removable magazine. Makes it an "assault weapon". I'm not 100% sure on that, though.

Anybody who is not at least prepared with the basics for an emergency situation is crazy in my opinion. Terrorist attacks could occur pretty much anywhere these days and the likelihood of them grows every day.

I'm fairly well prepared at home and if the house is intact I could survive here quite a while without electricity. I have a well and septic system so that isn't a problem. Without electricity I have a generator that can run the well pump and keep my pellet stove running for heat. I should have a better stock of non-perishable foods but I could get by now for quite a while.

One of the biggest drawbacks to my self-sufficiency plan is storing an adequate supply of gasoline for the generator. Even with stabilizer the crappy gas they are selling today with the ethanol in it just doesn't last long and has to be rotated to keep it fresh.

Since the Japan disaster I have also been thinking about the need for having cash on hand and some sort of emergency kit should I have to abandon the house with nowhere to go. I'm going to be working on that as well.
