That is all.
When I'm writing a paper that 1/4 of my grade is dependent on, I need to know it'll work when I have to submit a digital copy. When I'm making presentations, I need to know that my slideshow will work properly.
I used OpenOffice in high school... It was alright. But I ran into formatting issues more often than not, and it was just a PITA to use sometimes.

But I've also heard of formatting issues with that, as well... I got Office 2008 for free from my school. When you actually get around to needing it, USG is pretty good about offering discounts and free software. Doesn't your boyfriend work in the IT department? Couldn't get grab you a copy?
Apparently Air Force personnel can carry around umbrellas (even in their ABUs).
