I can see why he would react that way. My dad would probably kick someones ass if they called him a gypsy (hes from Romania) even though he isn't. Its a big no-no and definitely not something I'd ever say to him

In the case of my dad, there definitely are things you just don't say unless you want to get beaten.

My dad was telling me how his friend's daughter married a white guy and their kid looks white even though his mom is dark haired and dark skinned. Anyhoo...she went to Mexico with her little boy and they took him away from her because they said that couldn't be her son. They sued the border patrol and they settled and they got at least a couples Gs.
In the case of my dad, there definitely are things you just don't say unless you want to get beaten.
