Does having a fancy smart phone with a 3-5" screen make you feel important?

Otherwise why do you pay for data to look at a screen that small?

I've had a 15.4in notebook and now I have a 14in notebook. My MacBook is 13in. I honestly don't notice the difference between the MacBook or the Dell I had now. This laptop weighs significantly less than my 15.4 and it wreaked havoc on my back in my backpack. 17in would be waaaay too big for transporting it as often as I do.

Different strokes for different folks. This thread definitely proved that tonight. Smilie
True, and I suppose OP carries his laptop everywhere. So for transportation, smaller would be better... But I really can't stand the resolution more than anything. Even for a larger screen - laptops just have horrible resolution

Do you live in a cabin in the wilderness? Do you purchase your food in a store or go out and kill it? Do you drive to work, or walk? Do you have cable TV? Do you have any kind of TV? Do you NEED anything like that? Of course not. They're modern conveniences we enjoy.

I enjoy the very same "modern conveniences" you enjoy. I just don't buy in to the smart home hype and the "need" for a data plan that is ongoing month after month.

I'll concede one point... a business like one poster portrayed is perfect for a smart phone as he needs mobility and business contacts. He can write off as a business expense. Also anyone who gets is comped through their company it's a no-brainier.

There will be a day a mobile device makes sense but it will have to interface seamlessly to all your surroundings as in interfacing with you counter top, your work desk, even public kiosks. All with perfect backups locally at home. The phone will no longer be the main interface (it will just enable portability of your digital self)...everything else will be the interface allowing larger screens. The ones the have today are no where near that.

Really how much do you need to be on the grid? I don't see the point of paying hundreds just to have some large device attached 24/7. This is a phase like betamax.

People will one day realize that they are too connected and reliant on technology. It's actually scary.

I probably know more about tech than many of you. I'm smart enough not to get suckered into having it rule my life.
What happens when your cell phone service goes dead/silent for an extended time? Panic?

I read about half of it, but became tired of reading the hypocrisy coming out of your mouth.

Some people are on the move more than you, and use it for many different things. Aren't all modern conveniences wastes of money?

On the grid? Really? Roll Roll You're just as much "on the grid" as I, or others, are.

Humans in this era are very dependent on technology, SO ARE YOU. You may be fooling yourself into thinking you're not....but you are. Go ahead, cancel your power, cable/satellite/internet/cell phone and see how well you do.

Oh gee! I'm scared of your vast knowledge of technology as I am just a caveman who was thawed out by some of your scientists.

All of what you said logically follows the same argument for any cell phone plan (kinda like the one you pay for). So just because I think a tablet with 3g plan is a waste of money doesn't mean I can't see how others would think otherwise. It isn't about keeping up with the joneses, its about perceived benefit vs cost. If the benefit is higher then its easy to justify the costs, open your eyes buddy!

PS. my mobile data and cell phone plan is only 20 bucks a month.. unlimited data/2000 minutes/unlimited text/tethering/mms Smilie

How much was your phone?

What do you do with the data plan that makes the $240/yr extra worth it?

Show me the value, I want to understand.

You've had 10 pages of people explaining it to you and "showing the value". People "like you" are idiots, they'll never "get it".

Note to mods: that is not a personal attack. I'm attacking people "like him". Wink

My phone was 300, I do not have a contract.
I sold my skycaddie/ipod and garmin because it replaced that.

I can now play golf and answer work emails on the fly, thats worth well over 240 to me.
I can also do most functions of a regular computer without lugging a laptop around. Thats worth well over 240 to me.

I'll settle for either proving you know more about tech, or proving that you're smart.
