Wonder what actual person pays for in free gas a year. Given I live in a medium size city, and have to go to a bigger city 120 miles away every time I need to fly away on business, see a concert, or go to a sporting event. I'm not even someone who lives in a rural area.

If I had to work out the average gas price, and how much I normally have to fill up, I'd say I could drive for a year on at least $100. less than that here in Florida. This is an average gas price of $3.65, since it goes as low as $3.11 or so in the beginning of the year, and up to about $3.90 during the summer.

I have a 22 mile commute to work, and a 27 mile trip back, because I drop someone off coming back, and I've heard that's an above average commute, though I doubt that these days. I drive a 1997 Accord, so I'm not driving a hybrid or anything, but that would suit me for a year easily, as I used a fill-up frequency of once a week; rather than once every nine days or so, which is what I usually do.

so would you say you go through 2-3 gallons per work day?

So 5 days x 52 weeks is 260 work days
260 work days x 2.5 gallons a day = 650 gallons of fuel
Assuming $3.30 a gallon (think that is on cheap side) = $2145

NOT factoring in weekends and possible longer range road trips...$200 difference would factor in to being another 60 gallons. NOT exactly a ton of wiggle room/

I get about 32 miles per gallon if I drive sensibly, about 27mpg if I drive... typically. At 27mpg I fill up approximately 12.6 gallons of my tank about once a week, at 32 mpg it's more like a tank every nine days.
So even at $3.90 a gallon filling up weekly, it cost me about $50. a week, and at the low side it costs me something like $40. a week, so I figure between the two, it'd land me right in the middle.

52 * 50 being $2600. a year and 52 * 40 being $2080. a year

No, it's not really a ton of wiggle room, but it would be enough to give someone like me free gas for a year.
