Hello, My Name is Mike. I Give A Thesis As to Why Steven Hawking Could Be Wrong.

Now don't get me wrong, I used to think Steven Hawking was the smartest person ever. As someone else that is smart (me), I watch Discovery and TLC a lot - minus Kate Plus Eight hehe.. Anyways, let's get down to what is bothering me.

I was thinking the other day of the entire basis of why the Big Bang Theory is the top suggested theory going right now in the science realm. Let's ignore religion and let's use what we know. For those unaware, the Big Bang is basically the theory that everything originated from a single point so small and so tiny that you couldn't even see it with your own eyes. Let's put this into your mind.

Now the Big Bang is used mostly because of the Doppler Effect. No I ain't talking weather. I'm talking color shift. Basically things that move very fast away from you create a redshift (red color behind them). Those that are coming toward you fast create a blueshift (blue in front of them). So what scientist have done is examine the universe and see all this redshift everywhere. They basically have concluded that everything is moving away from us.

My problem is the following:

1) The Doppler Effect doesn't take into account the source point of view. Who is to say the Earth isn't the one moving away fast? If you want to include our solar system, let's say the Sun and the 8 planets are the ones moving away from everything else.

2) If everything is moving so far away from each other at such fast speeds, why is Steven Hawking even suggesting that we attempt to travel to other solar systems thousands of light years away from us (speeds we can't even come close to). By the time we reach where they were when we left earth, they will no longer be there, right? They are moving so fast to create a redshift that we would never make the destination. The travel time would be infinite.

3) Let's say that it is just our solar system moving away from everything else. That would destroy the Big Bang theory completely and then do away with the idea that we all originated from one single point in space. It also destroys Steven Hawking's theory that before the Big Bang, there was no space.

If this is too complicated for you to understand, let me know and I can explain more.

Ditto.

At the very least, they're not smart because of it.

Iagree

I would so rep you for that post if I could. I LOL'd. laugh out loud

What shows do you watch on there? Do they have anything good?

I don't get that channel, so I'm curious. The only thing I've seen recently is clips of that "toddlers in tiaras" show, and that made me want to vomit

That and the people in the grocery forum apparently all despise the people on "extreme couponing."

Well said with your corrections. Almost exactly what I was going to say.

The whole "I watch TV therefore I am smart" kinda threw me too.

I really think there is no other thread of "Mike's" that proves his lack of intellect better than this one.

First the shifting of colors due to the absolute speed of light. As idk stated it's the object that we see color shifted, not a trailing color cloud in the direction it is going.

Second the idea that everything is moving away from us or that we are moving away from everything. If you look up into the night sky and see stars in every direction (not a single west wall of stars) then it is fair to assume that we are surrounded in all directions by mass of one kind or another. If we are moving away from everything then we would be imploding. The only other option is that things are moving away from us. And the actual fact is just as idk said, some things are moving away and some are moving closer, it has been found that the relation of these motions gives rise to an expanding universe (at least it our visible section of the universe. I do agree that this could be just a subject of something like pressure waves in our atmosphere and things in another part of the universe are condensing while our section is expanding. No one can say what is happening in parts of the universe that we are unable to see or detect in any way.
Third, he refers to light years as a speed... Really? Then he says that it would take an infinite amount of time to travel to these places. Really? Let's throw in relativity, just in case there's any substance to that theory. Anything moving away from us would be moving at most the speed of light - 1. That is a speed wou could possibly reach (in theory). Given that information we could reach these destinations. But then again if you look deeper into relativity, we could travel towards this other solar system at the speed (speed of light - 1), not just the direct translation of the speed of light minus their speed (in this case 1 or so).

Long story short, there is nothing in the universe that we know of that is moving faster than we have the ability of going and exceeding (except massless particles). It gets really fun when something is moving away from the earth near the speed of light and we are in a ship moving toward it near the speed of light. That would make you think we are moving near 2 speed of light based on earth being stationary, but we really are only moving near the speed of light with relation to the earth... Good times.

Fourth, again, there is no way that everything in the universe is stationary and we are moving away from them all since we are completely surrounded and to move away from being completely surrounded we would have to be shrinking. That could very well be the case too. Since we don't know what gives particles mass we don't know what gives particles volume, so volume could be relative to our current space-time.

Alright. This might have been as long winded as the OP, but hopefully it actually makes sense. I'm a bit of a physics geeks, so people who don't get it but think they do really bug me. Ok, on with your day everyone...

I'm a slickdealer, I don't pay for cable!

And I have moral conflicts with stealing it from someone, so that's not gonna happen either. (Based off of the hot deals forum, I would guess that the vast majority of people on SD who have cable obtain it this way...)

cut it out. you're getting me flustered again. we've already soiled your thread; no need to soil this one too.

I already told you i pay for a landline. It's 10 bucks a month which is cheaper than adding more minutes to my mobile plan.

I'd also like to point out that there isn't an actual thesis statement in Mike's post. I'm just saying....it's contradictory to what he titled his post as.

What kind of phone plan do you have that doesn't offer unlimited mobile to mobile? Crazy

That's stupid, what crappy network is that?!

Sprint gives us ulimited mobile to mobile on any network. And just about everyone we know has a mobile phone.

The only one I know that still has both is my dad, and that's just because he's old. I don't know why he has it, it's totally useless. We all just call his cell anyway. LMAO

I'll go ahead and say that DW can't find her phone very often so i need a way to get in touch with her and her with me.

That.....and I live like an old person so I have to have a landline. MLV and Vec taught me the secrets of being old, but I still haven't passed the voyeur class.

You're like a 60-year-old man trapped in a 30-year-old man's body... scary.

I like the cooking competition shows and Cake Boss, Say Yes to the Dress (okay, like all of their wedding shows), Strange Addictions, I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant, etc. I'll watch Toddlers and Tiaras (horrified, but I'll watch it laugh out loud). IDK, I can watch pretty much any show on there, I guess.
