First time I've felt one in NC. Whee

At least I'm pretty sure that's what we just felt... office was shaking for several seconds. Nothing big, but unusual for here.

Wow...the East Coast is going nuts over a little tiny 5.9 that wouldn't even make the news out here in CA! I guess now when my East Coast friends say West Coasters can't drive in the rain, I'll have something to fling back! Bonk
i doubt many are truly upset over the shaking. it's just a shocker because earthquakes are so rare on this side of the country.
however, to address your point: we get thunderstorms, hurricanes, snow storms, ice storms, hail, etc. and we can still drive.
(those of us north of the mason dixon line, that is Cool

There was nobody in the immediate vicinity who was from CA to tell us what was happening!

But when you aren't used to it and your buildings aren't made for it then it is scary. Plus, it is WAY out of the norm. You wouldn't hear about it in CA because you have them all the time. Also, 5.9 is a pretty good shake.

i bet a bunch of people at the numerous military/gov installations in the quake vicinity were freaking out, thinking "oh-no somebody pressed the wrong button!"

Ya, I can see that, and 5.9 is a strongish earthquake locally. It makes sense that people in Virginia or DC or Maryland are freaked out. OMG

What gets me Confused is why people in New York City or Philly or places 300+ miles up the coast are evacuating/freaking out! C'mon now! Whee

We felt it in Madison Wisconsin! The building was moving back and forward for a while.

Really? I'm jealous. I felt nothing.

CA native over here but living in NJ. The buildings here are older and not built on rollers like in CA. So, if people are freaking out, it's because they're unsure of the structure they're in. It's ok to be safe; It beats having to dig them out later, kwim?

This this is also post 9-11, people think such things as building shaking maybe be a result of a terrorist attack close by, etc etc.
