Call me crazy, but wouldn't a moral checkup alleviate this particular public health concern?

One in 13 teenage girls, aged 14 to 20, reported having a group-sex experience, with those young women more likely to have been exposed to pornography and childhood sexual abuse than their peers, according to a new study led by a Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) researcher. In a study published in the Journal of Urban Health: Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine, Emily Rothman, associate professor of community health sciences at BUSPH, and colleagues surveyed 328 females who had utilized a Boston-area community or school-based health clinic, to explore whether they had ever had sex with multiple partners -- either consensual or forced. The authors call this sexual experience "multi-person sex," or MPS, in order to underscore that it refers to any group sex experience on a continuum from gang rape to sex parties. Of the 7.3 percent who said they had group sex, more than half reported being pressured to engage in the group-sex situation. Forty-five percent reported a lack of condom use by a male participant during the most recent group-sex encounter. Participants with MPS experience also were more likely to report cigarette smoking, dating violence victimization, or ever being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease, the study found. |

That would make for a good topic. I'll open another thread.
Personally, I take issue with any sexual act that emerges from a trend, pressure, coercion or violence. I have a problem when any type of force is involved - however "mild" it may be - and I have an even bigger problem with it when you're talking about minors.
It's disturbing.
I don't mind changing the channel if the story is inappropriate, but I shouldn't have to do it for commercials. I'm all for personal freedom and capitalism which means I don't want to place restrictions on commercials, but I want stations to take some responsibility for the money the accept for advertising space.
Maybe that means the program is inappropriate all together?

If you have to change the channel for the content of the program, why would the commercials be any different?

These commercials are typically 15 to 30 seconds. They have to get a message across and do it fast. Consequently, marketers try to appeal to your strongest urges to make the most impact. I know as a man that means marketers want to appeal to my stomach and my dick. Both of these evoke primal urges on the deepest level that we don't even recognize, but imagine the confusion when the kids see a commercial like that. Something is triggered in them they don't realize, and then they see something about a woman being raped. So what is the impression they take away of sex? How much more influence to I have over them to teach them that sex is about being intimate with your spouse when they are bombarded by mixed messages in every form of media and print. The commercials are very psychological in nature, and combining that with a learning experience of what goes on in the world around them sends mixed messages their minds aren't equipped to deal with yet.
Heck group sex can be traced back to the roman orgies and probably even before that...
The way the internet and communication make local news global on the drop of the dime gives the impression things are changing. Just like on the news you can almost find a murder a night, does that means murders are up, no the violent crime rate has been dropping. It just you wouldn't hear about it all the time.
Young adults like sex, I know I did when i was a teenager. The only difference is I didn't have to fill out a study detailing it. How about you have a poll, where you ask everyone over the age of 30 if they have had a group sex experience when they were younger. I wonder if the percentages would be the same.
I know there will be those that go "back in my day, kids were taught morals, kids didn't have sex, had to work for a living, milked cows before school and had to walk uphill to school in the snow both ways".
Let's face facts, young adults will be young adults... it's just with the influxe of social networking, round the clock news, etc, we just hear a lot more about it then our parents heard about us..
I had to look that one up:

Where were girls like that when I was in high school?

I agree. I don't think it's anything new at all. Parents have been failing for millennia (sp?).

It sounds like you're worried about him confusing sex with rape - have you talked to him about either? If not, why let him watch stuff like that?
In my opinion, if people want to bury their heads in the sand, then they might as well bury their genitals in the sand too. That way, they'll have a greater likelihood of staying safe.

2 points.
1. There is this guy named Sandusky from Penn State interested in your product.
2. Chris Hasen from Dateline would like to talk to you.

I disagree. I don't think it's new, but it's absolutely faster, more common, and more accepted. Ask people in their 30s if they remember girls making out in Junior high because boys liked it. Ask a fourteen year old today the same question. Certain things haven't changed, we just hear about them more. Some things HAVE changed, see my "pushing the envelope" comment. A kid today can see goatse, tubgirl, etc on their phones. I don't have any idea where I would have seen that at their age.
