USAA offers some of the best rates and perks on car rentals in my opinion. Especially for drivers who are 18 to 24, typically saves $25 to $30 per day. I have only used the Hertz discount and it's saved me a lot of money.

This might be YMMV for some as technically you are required to show proof of your USAA membership (debit card) upon getting the car. Just open a USAA Free Checking account (takes about 10 mins) and you are good to go.

Recently did a quote for a 3 month rental from the Denver Airport (going for an internship and am under 24) and they quoted me almost $3600 and with the USAA discount it dropped to $1800!

Have also gotten weekly rentals in Atlanta for about $119 to $125 a week for a full size.

Are these still valid? When I enter the code it gives me the discount.. but none of the extras like loss damage waiver cost is included. The Avis one is trying to charge me by the mile too.
I haven't used the Avis discount so I don't know what would be up with the mileage. Is it a one-way rental?

As for the insurance etc. Just decline it. The coverage is through USAA so as long as you are a USAA member, they will be the ones that step in for the insurance.

Ah that's the problem I guess. I tried a one-way rental with Hertz and it wouldn't work either. I persuaded the local office to fix it though. Good luck!

I can verify that Opening a Checking account is not necessary.

Call USAA - 1-800-531-8722 and ask them to create a membership number. If they ask what services you're interested in, just tell them you want to register on the website to see what services they offer and it won't let you without a membership number. They'll create it for you over the phone.

That's it. Register on the website. A print out of the Profile Page-with your name, address and membership number is ample proof for the rental agency.

Also- One needs to use one of their MAJOR products (such as insurance, investments etc) to be eligible for the Primary Liability Coverage. Opening a free checking account will not make you eligible. I have called and verified this.

Having a membership number will only let you use the discount code. that's it.

hope that helps.

Yes they will. ALWAYS assume that they will.

I'm sure many will tell you that nobody asked THEM...but why risk this?

If they ask you for proof and you don't have it- and if you don't have a backup rental booked, expect to pay REALLY expensive walk-in prices.

Better safe than sorry. Smilie

If you have their insurance or their credit card they'll cover you; I doubt they will cover you just for having a checking account/membership number.

A place we've had good luck with lately (and we check everywhere) is of all things costco.com. We've got some pretty decent deals through them (but we are not underage).

If you are under 25 nothing beats these discounts, i personally have saved 100s by booking through USAA. For people 25 and over i would agree that sometimes there are better deals out there.

Iagree the second best price I saw for my rental was at Costco, with AARP coming in a very close at third place.

And yeah, having a membership number ONLY gets you the discounted price. Nothing else.

Big GrinWhere did you find that link? I can't seem to find it on the website...Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
I tried registering by clicking on register on the top of the page.. and the 2 options were register via SSN or membership number.
I found that creating a membership number was the fastest way. Once you get the number, all you have to do is choose register with membership number and you're done.

Hey,

I was looking for more information regarding the USAA discounts that they have if you are a member for them.
I was to rent a car for 4 days...I'm under 25.

I opened up an online account with USAA and i got a Membership member, but i am not a member of any of their offers..like insurance and so on.

Is the membership member number the only proof i need to get the age waiver and the discount for the car rental?

Thank you!Smilie

a print-out of the USAA profile page showing your name, address and membership number should work as proof.Smilie

What I did was to call the agency (Budget) and tell them that I lost my card and te replacement wouldn't arrive in time, would a print-out work? They said yes. though YMMV.

How can i get print that out? I don't see an option that takes me to my profile page.

ThanksSmilie

USAA FTW!

On a side note, their auto loan quotes are negotiable. I got quoted a higher rate (not sure why) and after speaking with a CSR on the phone, got them to match PenFed.

Oh, btw, I have used USAA's rates with Hertz many times and have never been asked to show proof of membership. And I paid with my non-USAA CC.
