There are many theories on the causes of obesity. Some say too much fat, too many calories. Ironically, many of the modern diets have generally failed to fix the problem.
The above video is long. For people who will reply with tl;dr here is the synopsis:
Watch it if you get a chance. I really enjoyed it and found it both eye opening and informative, without needing some shock factor or sex to sell it. It follows a simple premise and makes a lot of sense.

The fat problem in this country started when schools stated limiting or removing the physical education. This all stated about 20 years ago and it isn't a coincidence that the fat problem in this country started right after that.
Today, kids play video games and sit in front of the computer all day instead of going out and running around. Playing like kids are suppose to play. They use their cell phones or text friends instead of walking to their friends house.
The problem is not sugar. The problem is the education in this country.
I have no problem allowing McDonalds for my kids. Hell, I'll eat a Big Mac with them. I love my chocolate and I won't stop my kids from eating their favorite snacks because I am not a hypocrite.......but, they do not play video games during the day. They have to play sports. They have to go outside and do what kids do.
I will never blame the food for obesity. I will always blame the parents for allowing obesity in their house.
Watch the video and then come back and reply. The video makes a very convincing argument and has a great deal of data, including filling holes of HOW we got into this problem (how sugar got into everything we consume).
Any word from your relatives?
Read this post for the real "HOW we got into this problem"
Watch the video then come back. Everything people say here is the common anecdotal belief (too much fat, not enough activity).
My family is living proof that you could indulge without getting fat.

As for the relatives, we talk every few days. Things are not stable, but everyone is OK.

Luckily, there a still a lot of us left who were taught all of this in school. 3 square meals a day, the 4 food groups, physical and health education.
Blaming 1 thing (sugar in this case) is just irresponsible.

Again, this is anecdotal evidence most people believe (including myself).

I have no problem spending an extra 10 or 15 minutes in the gym if it gets me a nice big greasy burger.

I stated my argument in just 1 post and it's more believable then the sugar conspiracy.
