Because he wasn't very good. I didn't even want to hire him in the first place, but far be it for corporate to listen to their senior developer... I just had to pick someone, and he had sucked the least out of the people that hadn't already accepted other offers.
This past Wednesday I found out that after being here for two and a half weeks, he hadn't even compiled the main project, or even attempted to, despite having spent three days analyzing a section of the code that saves data (I'd told him to set a breakpoint to help him understand the values being passed into a specific function last Friday). It came up because that was a new workstation and it was missing some DLL references, so it would have been impossible to compile until they were fixed.

Oh, and he's being replaced with a guy I interviewed to replace the guy that left on Monday, but then it turned out one of our former employees was looking to come back.

Holy crap! Even I know how to set a break point, and I'm just a tester! But it's often how I test things that don't have a way to test scenarios or do unit testing. It's more for triggers or buffered writers.
Yeah, that was another part of it. He quoted a request to add a feature... and all he quoted was the bit revolving around the UI, and that's all he developed. So there's a checkbox on a screen now, but there was no logic added to actually perform the requested feature.
And he sent it in for testing, and obviously did no testing himself, because when you save, it doesn't actually... save. Then if you try to save again, you get an error. We don't expect rigorous testing from our developers, but you should at least validate that the thing you just wrote farking WORKS. Especially when it consists of checking a box and hitting a button. Takes two minutes.

Want to know something slightly humorous? We are using a pick system. I think we're the last company on earth to still be using one. laugh out loud
Not terribly familiar with that, but it sounds interesting.

Um...all of it...the fact that you HAD to hire a crappy guy, the fact that he did uber crappy work, instead of at least trying when he was given a chance and the crazy round-about way of replacing people...Your company Crazy

What a douche. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

A pick system is an IBM exclusive language developed in the 50s, and it's incredible agile. I'd say it's probably like a mix between Java and C. It only suffers from data integrity issues (duplication), but that can be programmed around. It's also incredibly cheap to maintain which is one reason we rank higher than McD's and Nike on the Fortune 500 list.

I think there's a perception that I may have overly high expectations... and yet, every single person I hire that I feel is right for the job excels at it, and every person I have to hire just because they feel like I've interviewed enough people ends up sucking. Some of these people would work out fine if they were willing to have a higher headcount, but as it is, they all have to be talented.

When I go to conventions and tell people what company I work for, and then tell them that we only have 8 testers for the whole company, they flip out and want to know how we keep things going and get out a quality product. Oh that's easy.....15 hour days 7 days a week because when HQ says to get creative on a tight project, it only means to work overtime and not move the deadline or the requirements. And don't expect over time pay because you're salaried.

Yeah, they know I'd leave if they tried to pull that on me. I've got plenty of contacts in this town, and people that would like to have me working with them.

That's when you know the IT guy with the new baby is probably getting underpaid.
