I replied! Rather lengthy. EEK! Thanks about the compliment, if I didn't do the spreadsheet, I'd gone nuts! And I would be freaking out and die if I didn't have enough saved up and continue to postpone.

Pacific Palms surprised me too! I didn't think it would be that nice either. At least the guy's wedding pictures made it seem very nice! I guess...for $40K.
....
You seem like the type to take things in stride very well nod I would absolutely cry if it rained on my wedding day. I'm just super worried about the marine layer, but hopefully a south facing beach should be okay..but you never know.
...
hug everything will come together as planned. Do you want me to talk to my friend and see if she can drop anything to Kelly Zhang and see if they can book you? I can try, but nothing's guaranteed. LMK
you know, i think it's pretty ridiculous how fashionable weddings have become. it's like, people decide to just keep upping their prices because they can, and then everything starts to cost an arm and a leg. i yell at dbf for not doing things sooner, kuz everything costs more now! laugh out loud
with pacific palms, it's a hotel. hotels tend to charge a lot bc of the added amenities and the convenience. they do all the catering/etc, so really it's a one stop shop. it makes it easier on you and thus they charge more. it's usually the alcohol packages that are ridiculous - that's why i wanted a venue where i could bring my own. i think it will save us a little, plus i get to choose what I want, not what the hotel wants to serve - i'm a liquor snob. but i do love the convenience of a hotel, esp for my out of towners (which is a lot of my friends).
and i don't know if it would help - a couple of my friends know her and have used her too - one said she "had a personal relationship with her", whatever that means. she also offered to talk to her for me, but i feel like, if they already booked 6 weddings that day, how would someone talking to her help any?

Sigh. I actually like a lot of VS's spring/summer stuff... I'm a sucker for crochet and pretty little details. But I just joined Mint.com to have all my budgeting info in one place, and I know it's going to keep me from spending (which is good). Trying to save for a down payment on a house with the BF/soon-to-be fiance. (Picked my engagement ring a couple months ago! Whee)

Come onnn, $500 SRC.

Thank you! Sometimes I feel bad that I know exactly what it looks like (although I deleted the picture from my phone so I can't drool over it), but I wanted something really unique and it took a while to find it so once I kept coming back to it, my BF knew it was the "right" one. Smilie
congrats taryn!!! how mean of your dbf to hold onto it for 2 months!! i picked out mine too, and i love that i did. don't be fooled by the whole "it needs to be a surprise" aspect - that was conjured up by debeers many years ago because they realized men buy larger diamonds when they pick it out themselves. i'm much happier that i got what i wanted!

I'm curious, how do you like mint.com? I've heard people talk about it, but I put together my own spreadsheet for expenses since I can always change a couple of numbers and see how it affects the down the road.

I guess wedding venues and services are feeling the inflation rate or something Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) Pacific Palms is a nice place, but location wise, it's just kinda weird, but gorgeous view at night though!

Yes, the option of doing own catering is very important to me, though I'll probably just use provided, who knows. I don't care much about alcohol for such a big party, if it was small, then okay, I can host what I like. We're hoping that because our wedding is going to be in CA, and DBF's friends are mostly Midwest/Seattle, it would decrease some of the attendance because of flight costs. Super awesome you can bring what you like!

I'm hesitant about blocking off rooms because if you don't fill it up with people, you still get charged! No thanks, people, get your own rooms! I read that blocking off rooms doesn't mean it's cheaper, either. shake head

Anyone having trouble with the pink flip flops? I'm trying to redeem online and it keeps trying to only have me print the coupon on, but that doesn't include the offer code or pin!

just tell dbf (since his head is already spinning at the impending cost) that the easiest way to cut costs is to cut # of ppl. Big Grin (it's true!)
awww that blows that your hotel charges you for blocks. i'm lucky that most of the ones in the area for me do courtesy blocks. i think the good thing about the blocks is, your guests are usually all on the same floor/in the same area. but really, it's not that important, and you're totally right - they can probably find better rates elsewhere! it is usually a little cheaper than the going rate for your weekend - my quotes have been 20-50 off the current 'best available rate'. i will probably do blocks at 1 or 2 hotels to let them choose (and since there's no charge to us) but will also let them know which one i plan on staying at, and also that it may be cheaper to book without our rate. but the nice thing about the hotel block is, if your guests book under your code, you can see/manage it, so you can actually view who books and whatnot. kinda neat.

Haha! Never mind two months--I don't think he's planning to propose until MAY and I decided on a ring right after Christmas. EEK! I don't care much because I know it's coming, but my ring is PERFECT (seriously, I absolutely love it) and I want to be able to stare at it on my finger! laugh out loud

BF and I visited an estate/antique jeweler while we were looking because I was more interested in the band than the actual diamond. (Originally, we actually wanted moissanite because we're really bothered by the diamond industry in general, but moissanite isn't available at many B&M retailers at all and BF didn't want to buy a ring online.)

It was hard enough for ME to decide on which ring, never mind if he had had to pick it out on his own. Too many choices! The one I chose is a vintage reproduction based on one from England around 1900, so there's tons of filigree and detailing on the band. It was a small shop, so the jeweler was super nice and patient--he took almost 40% off the base price of the ring! I was so glad BF and I went together because it made the whole process so much easier, and he got to help me pick a ring that we both really like.

I literally just signed up for it yesterday, but it seems convenient. I like having everything--savings, checking, loans, car insurance--in one place. I can set detailed budgets for all kinds of categories and they have a "Goal" section, so I chose "Buy a Home." It let us enter our income and preferred down payment and average interest rate to determine how much house we can afford; then it calculated how much we need to put away per month to be able to afford the down payment by Jan. 2013. I haven't set other goals aside from that, but if the other options are equally detailed, it'll wind up being really helpful.

I used to use spreadsheets, but I wound up with quite a few and I'd rather have all the info in one central spot.

On another note, are you engaged?! Or planning on it? How fun! I haven't started looking into much yet in terms of venues or pricing but let's compare notes when the time comes, shall we?
