Pacific Palms surprised me too! I didn't think it would be that nice either. At least the guy's wedding pictures made it seem very nice! I guess...for $40K.
....
You seem like the type to take things in stride very well
...
with pacific palms, it's a hotel. hotels tend to charge a lot bc of the added amenities and the convenience. they do all the catering/etc, so really it's a one stop shop. it makes it easier on you and thus they charge more. it's usually the alcohol packages that are ridiculous - that's why i wanted a venue where i could bring my own. i think it will save us a little, plus i get to choose what I want, not what the hotel wants to serve - i'm a liquor snob. but i do love the convenience of a hotel, esp for my out of towners (which is a lot of my friends).
and i don't know if it would help - a couple of my friends know her and have used her too - one said she "had a personal relationship with her", whatever that means. she also offered to talk to her for me, but i feel like, if they already booked 6 weddings that day, how would someone talking to her help any?
Come onnn, $500 SRC.
gave express at mjr a 2nd chance, i looked quickly, and i'm not enticed by the prices.

I'm curious, how do you like mint.com? I've heard people talk about it, but I put together my own spreadsheet for expenses since I can always change a couple of numbers and see how it affects the down the road.

Yes, the option of doing own catering is very important to me, though I'll probably just use provided, who knows. I don't care much about alcohol for such a big party, if it was small, then okay, I can host what I like. We're hoping that because our wedding is going to be in CA, and DBF's friends are mostly Midwest/Seattle, it would decrease some of the attendance because of flight costs. Super awesome you can bring what you like!
I'm hesitant about blocking off rooms because if you don't fill it up with people, you still get charged! No thanks, people, get your own rooms! I read that blocking off rooms doesn't mean it's cheaper, either.

I guess wedding venues and services are feeling the inflation rate or something

awww that blows that your hotel charges you for blocks. i'm lucky that most of the ones in the area for me do courtesy blocks. i think the good thing about the blocks is, your guests are usually all on the same floor/in the same area. but really, it's not that important, and you're totally right - they can probably find better rates elsewhere! it is usually a little cheaper than the going rate for your weekend - my quotes have been 20-50 off the current 'best available rate'. i will probably do blocks at 1 or 2 hotels to let them choose (and since there's no charge to us) but will also let them know which one i plan on staying at, and also that it may be cheaper to book without our rate. but the nice thing about the hotel block is, if your guests book under your code, you can see/manage it, so you can actually view who books and whatnot. kinda neat.
BF and I visited an estate/antique jeweler while we were looking because I was more interested in the band than the actual diamond. (Originally, we actually wanted moissanite because we're really bothered by the diamond industry in general, but moissanite isn't available at many B&M retailers at all and BF didn't want to buy a ring online.)
It was hard enough for ME to decide on which ring, never mind if he had had to pick it out on his own. Too many choices! The one I chose is a vintage reproduction based on one from England around 1900, so there's tons of filigree and detailing on the band. It was a small shop, so the jeweler was super nice and patient--he took almost 40% off the base price of the ring! I was so glad BF and I went together because it made the whole process so much easier, and he got to help me pick a ring that we both really like.

I used to use spreadsheets, but I wound up with quite a few and I'd rather have all the info in one central spot.
On another note, are you engaged?! Or planning on it? How fun! I haven't started looking into much yet in terms of venues or pricing but let's compare notes when the time comes, shall we?
