I just ignore dh when he says I spend too much and he ignores me when I say he does. We don't really fight about money.

When does nordstrom do the mascara deal? I know they normally have a clinique gwp then. That's one of my favorites!

OK, now that I know some of you are instructors, too, I have a dilemma:

I have a student who took the first exam of the semester, but didn't take the second or third exam and didn't hand in the term paper. He attended class at the beginning, missed a bunch, attended for a couple weeks, and then missed a bunch again. He e-mailed me to make up one of the exams and then never did.

Apparently he has tons of doctors' notes because something is wrong with his chest, but he hasn't come in to show any of them to me. (I don't think he's lying; he just hasn't given me any of them.) I feel bad because he's a nice kid, and he e-mailed me to ask what he can do about his grade because he doesn't want to fail--but one of my TAs knows him and saw him doing a dance routine with his frat at Greek Week.

I can't give him a "No Work" because he handed in his first exam, and I feel like he's missing too much to get an "Incomplete." That would be almost a whole semester's worth of work to make up. So should I just give him an F and call it a day?
If he did well on the final (C or better), I would give him a D- if he turns in the paper within the next 7 days. If he can show a passing understanding of the material on a comprehensive exam and can string words an concepts together enough to produce a coherent essay, I would say he learned enough from the course to show a passing understanding.

If he doesn't turn in the term paper or does poorly on the exam, fail him. Grades are a reflection of a student's understanding of course concepts. If he doesn't understand anything, then his grade will reflect it.

Alternatively, you can use the justification that if you see doctor's notes, you will just put all of the weight on the final. If he passed the final, then he should pass the course then. This way, there's more motivation behind what you're doing. I think if he failed the final and you explained it like that, there's very little he could come back at you and say.

Hello everyone. Wave
In regards to your question, I am an elite member (I believe this means because I am pre-existing folica.com member or purchased items in the past from this site) who receives free shipping with any purchase. Great incentive to become an elite member. hth.

I found two Kerastase hair care products on sale. The Kerastase Age Premium Bain Substantiff Shampoo [folica.com] (Reg. $27.95) 8.5 oz is $14.00 and this Kerastase Soleil Lait Richesse [folica.com] (Reg. $30) 6.8 oz is $15.00. A great deal for both after coupon and fs.

If you are a shoprunner.com member, buy two 16 oz Philosophy shower gels [beauty.com] (choose from tinsel town or mulling spices) @ $8 each, free 8 oz Philosophy field of flowers lotion through your personal beauty.com email link, and 3 free samples for $16 oop. Don't forget cashback sites. Smilie
Thank you.

i just did a mock referral. it is a promo code they give you after you register through referral link. it's a long promo code one-time-use $10 off, not may10. since it's only 1 promo code per order, you can pick only one of the two. the advantage of referral link is it seems to be $10 off no minimum purchase for you. and you get to give someone a $10 off (which i suspect will be a code too, so nonstackable with any other offer).
Thank you.

You guys are great.

i don't really like the bone, but for some reason in flats i prefer white, or nude/blush. not a big fan of ivory, esp with our skin tone. i like the blue the best.

Go for the huts!!! It's your honeymoon - once in a life time!! The contrast of the white sand and the blue waters is beautiful! I've only seen up close shots before, but those that show the entire landscape makes it that much more gorgeous! ?Hello - glass floor!! Hope the fish actually swim under! I was just reading the comments about the sewage system, that would be pretty unromantic collecting everything in a bucket :v omit:

But really, when would you EVER splurge like that again? Highly likely not ever...so why not, if you guys can afford it...see it differently...you can buy less of whatever it is with a GWP/deal/whatever..and then put what you would've spent for makeup/clothing/shoes anyway into a separate savings for that to just create that illusion that in the end, it's not really that bad. Maybe that would help or something?

About my DBF - I have no freaking idea. I think he's stuck on the fact that I spent anyway and because I do spend, I ended up wasting money. Even though I am returning Crazy I just don't think guys understand shopping like we girls do! :co ol:

I'm on the same boat - also 26 and DBF is 28, but it's so hard like you said, seeing friends with lavish vacations, houses, etc...I also do realize that their parents probably paid for 90% of their things AND school so they got a really nice cushiony start.

Personally, I wish I started out differently with my finances. Once I had paid off my student loans, it was like OMG, I have all this extra money to spend! And I was putting money away, but not putting ENOUGH away. When I figured that out, it seemed too late and went into saving overdrive.

And I'm going to be in student loan debt AGAIN because I'm going back to get my Masters. Heck, I'm even 2 years behind you and red in doing that, even though it's usually what's required with at least a 4 year working experience before I go for my MBA. So on top of that, 90% chance not working for that period of time, plus needing to save up for a wedding, a house, honeymoon, it just seems like we'd have to postpone A LOT of things.

For my DBF, he was never taught about good finances and his family has been in financial trouble because of a couple of wrong moves. He has a lot of stuff, but, he doesn't seem to have put his feet in quicksand or anything yet. He also gives allowances to his three younger sisters, that's $300 right there that could be going into savings, but I understand his kind heart. There are things that he does that I don't understand such as allocating a high Christmas present budget to his family. I get that's something he wants to do, but he's always gifting them things randomly, isn't that enough, can't he pare down that budget? My family doesn't do Christmas, so that's a nice chunk for me saved. I just get annoyed because he then gets annoyed at me when I try to talk to him about finances because he's "doing all he can," but wants to live comfortably. On the flip side, he thinks I have it nice because I no longer have debt, etc...and he used to get mad because I was able to save more than he could, monthly and he makes 3 times as much as I did! So WTF, where's all the money going? look around He thinks he's doing a great job because he's not out like his coworkers buying $300 blenders, but seriously, I don't think he should be comparing himself to that, but I guess it's the same when I compare myself to my friends that have houses/go on lavish vacations.

I just want to be able to make up the gains that we lost compared to others and not let that happen too late in life. I just don't think reality has hit him yet, but he says I'm the one not being reasonable. Sigh. All this seems like it would be easier once we're in the same city. Sorry for the long tirade.
i know. i am totally leaning towards the overwater bungalows, at least for a part of the trip. i just need to figure out where...

i think dbf works his reverse psychology on me. i.e. when i was wedding dress shopping, he told me i could buy anything i wanted. that in turn made me not want to spend that much. Crazy

you guys will be fine - just work your magic on him and slowly he will come to. it is annoying when people around you have parents who spoil them. i've gotten really annoyed with a friend once because he was bragging about how much he saved last year (which is awesome, really, but do you really need to brag about it?) and i'm thinking, he didn't have to pay rent for half the year after he moved home. i can't exactly commute from my parents' place like he can! shake head i know, that's not the same thing, and i know a lot of people who have gotten houses handed down to them from their parents so they can blow their salaries on chanel bags and gucci watches. i just try not to compare too much - having to actually work for your house makes you appreciate it more. at least that's how i look at it.

how old are they? that is really lucky... he's too nice to his family. i'm glad dbf has the same policy of gift-giving as me (or actually they are even worse) - he and his family don't do presents, for bdays or xmas. i think his mom would yell at him if he bought her something. laugh out loud while my family's not *as* bad (my mom likes to buy me presents) it's still nice we're on the same page. i love presents, but i hate having to buy presents for xmas. it's annoying, bc i feel like i'm wasting money having that xmas deadline. things are so much cheaper after xmas! laugh out loud an ex once bought some hand scrub at bbw for his mom for mothers day. i liked it so i told him it was a nice scrub. but i got mine at 50% off during a sale. he bought it full price at $25. Faint i was so annoyed. i know my mom wouldn't care if i wanted to give her a present but it came a little late - she would appreciate that i saved $12.50 by waiting. i guess his family didn't work that way... obviously that relationship didn't work out.

I think what makes it even more frustrating is that even though I'm going to start a life with my DBF a few more years down the road, he's not overly concerned and makes more than enough to pay off his student loans easily, but it's getting done sooo slowly. . . .
nod Yeah, its a rough road that way if you decide to go to grad school after undergrad while your friends start their new jobs and talk about trips and cars... I've always been frugal so I was used to denying myself things. Things were better when I got married, since DH has a "real job" But yes- we had to figure out the finances. He comes from that buy without price checking, buy whatever they put a new feature on school of thought It was a big point of contention, but we both compromised eventually. Now I buy things that I actually like, as opposed to what is cheap and DH runs his purchases by me so we don't end up with 4 camera bags or MP3 players again shake head If both parties are willing to compromise, even if it's just a little, there's a solution to be found Smilie

reminds me - i'm starting to look at where to go for my honeymoon!!! any suggestions ladies? everything is astronomically expensive. when a night's stay costs $2k it kinda makes the $10 i save here or there seem useless.
We went to St. Thomas, USVI. They have white sand and you get to take a tiny ass plane there from Puerto Rico so it feels really exotic laugh out loud They have a honeymoon bay too! I liked St. John (BVI) better. Snorkeling was sooo awesome there! There are also white sands in Costa Rica, and black sand beaches as well. Costa Rica can be done for pretty cheap, most people there know some English, and if you know any Spanish, their brand of it is soooo easily understood (as opposed to Mexico where words are not separated by enough time for me to understand). There's an active volcano and hot springs spas it feeds. Also those jungle tree top tours, etc. Have you considered Thailand? DH's cousin lives there and the beaches look beautiful. Also- does anyone you know have a points program that they could give you as a gift to redeem for hotel nights? DH and I stayed free at Marriott resorts the entire time because he had traveled so much for work.

I'm really happy now, but I kick myself that it took me so long to figure everything out. I feel so far behind everyone else. I keep telling myself that I need to go to work every day for the rest of my life and really enjoy it--which I will--but it doesn't do much to make me feel better in the moment.
. . .
Wow, so many grad schoolers here! I'm even more surprised about all the Ph.D. seekers! I used to worry about being "behind" but then I thought, "well what does that even mean?". I went to a medical doctor for an on the job injury and he told me this was his 3rd career. He was first an engineer for 10 years, then a contractor, and then went to medical school at 40y/o. I love that story because it reminds me it's never too late. Big Grin

Quote from Taryn :
. .. So should I just give him an F and call it a day?
F. If he can get his doctors notes together (with appropriate dates) in the next year- he could petition for a grade change from my school. Requires some paper work, but can be done. You'll probably never hear from this guy again though Wink

Comfort Although, once you compare to others for savings, he can compare to others for spending so it might not be your strongest angle in the finance battle. Just calculate for him what 20% down on a house or condo looks like in SoCal... I bet his tune will change. DH used to say that I was hoarding money laugh out loud , but what a problem to have?! He was right though, I needed to ease up and be willing to spend on things that I really wanted. Meanwhile I got him to put an equal amount of $$ in savings, that he was spending on electronics & guitars. He doesn't do that anymore, but he was much more aware of the $$ when things "cost" him twice as much. Evil

yall, for us, giving to family is the normal. after one graduates from college, and there are still younger siblings in school, that one is "expected" to help out. it's not a must, but it's expected laugh out loud

also, i'm thankful we don't have student loans. the parents pay for school. and during my time, when you study, you just study, no work. i guess it is becoming more common now to have working students.
