Multiply this by that, add a zero, do it again with the alternate boxes, kick someone in the ass, then add all of your figures to get..........

If you use this method, it makes doing multiplication of larger numbers in your head much easier. If you figure that multiples of 10 are easier, you look at it as 80 times 47 added to 6 times 47. I think this is why it's taught.
However, I think this is easier for people who ALREADY HAVE A GRASP OF LARGE NUMBER MULTIPLICATION. This is why I think it's bullshit.
The people who pushed for this method are the same ones who were taught via the other method. So to THEM this is easier because they have an education in one method and then applied another and POOF it seems easier. They have no concept of what it is to be a fresh mind with no concept of these methods at all.
