World affairs just makes me sad.
That's so fake
...but you'd be okay with it if you were blindfolded, right? That would eliminate the "look in your eyes" problem.
I've not been good with this sort of thing in the past. Years ago, there was a great horned owl who used to follow me around. I have a few balconies around my house, including outside the room that I use as an office and the whole side of the house that has the master bedroom and dressing room, and wherever I was in the house, he'd settle on a nearby balcony railing or tree branch and hang out just on the other side of the glass.
He was big--as great horned owls are wont to be--and I just got used to having a large owl hanging out next to me all the time. Presumably during the night he'd be off doing whatever owlish things owls do in the night, but one morning he wasn't outside my window. Turned out he was at my front door--on the step so he was right there when I opened the door, but at that point he had died. An odd spot to pick for passing on, I suppose, but I never heard a thing that time either. It was a bit of a shock, actually.
The POA board meeting was a (minor) adventure. Apparently the county decided right before the board meeting that the "community room" was no longer going to be available for community use, so we ended up meeting in the playground across the parking lot instead (at sunset--and there are no lights there). After spending the evening with a few board members vigorously pushing entirely impractical ideas on how we could maintain constant surveillance over the all the properties and send notices of infractions (with pictures and demands for immediate correction) to the property owners, I am again determined to remain on the board. (This is not hard; I've always gotten more votes than everybody else.)
Most of the "covenant violations" were not actually against the covenants anyway. Fortunately, I brought a copy of the covenants with me for just such occasions. Unfortunately, it was dark and apparently I'm the only one on the board who can read in low light. Next time, I'm loading up all the covenants and bylaws onto a tablet and bringing that instead.
But somebody has to try to keep the POA board from doing what POA boards all too often want to do. I did manage to get through the Great Llama Wars of 2010 (with both myself and the llamas intact), so I suppose being the one to keep piping up to say, "the covenants/state laws/county regulations say you can't do that" to the rest of the board does have some small effect on the world.
Now, Trygve. Since you get the most votes, can't you run for President? Further, don't you have some level- headed neighbors that you could convince to become more involved and run also? Get rid of the trouble makers that show up for meetings unprepared, just looking to stir the pot and not really working to represent and serve the community.
And I would give you a hundred hugs
That was a very sweet story about the owl. Bittersweet.

One night I was awakened in the middle of the night by some scratching on the roof of my house. I got up and went out on the front porch and yelled "BOO!" All of a sudden the gigantic horned owl swooped down in front of me. I screamed like a girl and ran back into the house!
