I've been home for a couple of hours already. I was happy to be able to take my first warm shower in a couple of weeks.

I apologize for not being able to tell more about what we were doing until now... Because of the tensions in the region along with some vague and some less-than-vague threats, I didn't want to advertise what we were doing or timelines of what we were doing. OPSEC and all that. However, we're all back home and safe so I can post some more fun pictures and whatnot.

---MASSIVE PICTURE ATTACK WARNING---
I was participating in a bilateral training exercise between the US Army and the Malaysian Army. It was approximately two and a half weeks, and we stayed on a camp in southern Malaysia.

(lol, as I'm writing this, my emails are loading and I'm already up to over 500)

We flew into Singpore and crossed over the border into Johor Bahru, where we spent two days before heading into Ulu Tiram for the exercise.

This is Johor Bahru from my hotel room:

A dish served at the hotel restaurant:

This was a normal breakfast:

We usually had some form of rice, chicken, and a vegetable dish. By the end of the exercise I had mostly gone vegetarian because of the quality of the meat and I ate something that didn't work well with me for a few days.

I was awarded/given this for the work I did organizing and preparing the unit for the exercise:

We had a "cultural day" one day, where we went out into Johor and saw some various aspects of the different cultures that lived there. The first place we stopped was a crocodile farm:

and then we went to a couple of malls, a clocktower, and a Hindu glass temple.

There were pretty stark contrasts in some places:

This is where I lived:

and we had our choice of toilet amenities - "traditional":

or squatting:

Overall, we had a great time and met some of the best people I've had the pleasure of working with.

I did not! But I tried a bunch of stuff, including snake and monkey. They have some delicious fruits that I'm eager to try and find at the local world farmer's market.

It is humid as shit there, especially in the jungle areas. It's generally around 90% humidity, and the temp stays in the 90s. We didn't have A/C or anything like that in our rooms, but we got acclimated to it pretty quickly. One morning, it had dropped down to around 79 degrees with little humidity and I was literally shivering in my tent because it was such a vast difference from what the weather had been like up to that point. I'm wearing a jacket around right now (actually, we all were), and people are acting like I'm crazy because it's definitely not jacket weather in Georgia.

I also get to finish up my Malaria pills over the next two weeks, and adjust my digestive system back to American food. I lost about six pounds while I was over there... Probably another pound or two will come off in the next day or so as my body adjusts to being back home.

It's a department story. I don't normally shop there because it was my grandma's favorite store, so I associate it as an old people store. laugh out loud

I went with the traditional! The females seemed to prefer the squatting toilets, though, for some reason. Idk.

It actually is! I did have a little meat here or there (in the form of a sauce or gravy or something), but it was pretty bearable. Then again, it's really easy when there are no appetizing meats to eat.

If you travel on military assignment do you have to turn your passport over to anyone?

Welcome back! DW and I were just talking about you last night wondering what was going on. So were you just on drills?

Edit: just saw the joint ops/training comment.

I'd have chosen the traditional Wink

Were you sad to eat the monkey? They are so cute.

No, I had both my personal and official passport with me. I used my blue one to get in the country, but had the red/brown "just in case".

Yes, I'm the one on the right.

It was a command post exercise. We worked with the Malaysians to set up fully functioning TOC and ran a joint exercise with them... Sort of wargaming.

Not really. It was already cooked and prepared, so it's not like I was the sole cause of a monkey being killed. I probably would go after other animals if it came down to it, though. A lot of effort and not a lot of reward with monkeys. Snake is where it's at.
