You can do both, but some rice cookers cook rice much better than others. Like my $40 on from Costco, could never beat the one my parents have at home. It cooks unevenly at times, and the bottom can burn. While the nicer ones cook rice evenly all around.

What ever happened to hot water in a pot on the stove? I make awesome sticky rice that way.
Talk dirty about usenet to me drool

For me sometimes I use the rice cooker/steamer because it keeps it warm plus I just push it to the side of the counter top and it frees up a stove burner for me. Usually I made the rice for Wiley and would just have a little for me.

Well, I'm currently in the market for a new usenet and I'm going to give the one Paint suggested a try. So it's kind of guy on another guys usenet action. me-ow!
