My mom-io is out of town and when I told her about my Dyson find she said, what about meeeeeeeeeee?!?!? So, being the dutiful daughter that I am, I stopped by 3 stores. All full price. They were supers and not regular stores, which is where I found mine.
Thankfully I had other things to shop for so they weren't all wasted trips.

Cheapest autofocus lens with decent optics and a wide aperture you can get. That'll get you a greatly enhanced ability to isolate a subject against a blurry background--just set your camera to "A" for "Aperture priority," crank the aperture to where you want it, and go to town.
No zoom or IS, but 50mm is a decent focal length for a crop body. (You generally want a mild telephoto for portrait work, and 50mm is that on a rebel.)
