What if you buy the phone off contract?
meaning paying full price for one? ouch!

Then its likely the unlimited data plan may still be in play but don't quote me on that.

I have had the unlimited plan since the second gen iPhone. I've been grandfathered in with each upgrade on all my lines.

Sure, it's not a major step up. I never said that it was. It was an improvement and one that warrants an upgrade IMO. Especially when coupled with the new software. I don't believe you can't entirely remove the software from the equation since when it comes to a smartphone, for the most part, it helps make the phone what it is, from iPhone to Android to WP8.

Here's a good question that no one seems to want to answer, but instead prefers to just attack me... What realistic items is the iPhone 5 missing that you think would have made it good enough to "amaze" you?
Folks have come to expect the unexpected with major releases of iPhones/iPads/etc....some major surprise/whoa factor.

Almost everyone were expecting larger screen and LTE. It would have been a major disappointment had it not come with those.

It's all perspective. I paid $650 for the digital star tac about a year after I paid $400 for the analog star tac. I'll be buying this off contract. Just made $200 profit on my 4s, so that lessens the blow.

So why is it such a disappointment that it did? A bet a lot of the previous surprise/whoa factor was with how secret everything was up until launch. Now that pretty much everything manages to get leaked, people are used to seeing what the phone is going to be prior to launch. It's unrealistic to expect more than what's leaked these days..

I'm getting one. I only wish android harware had the longevity or held it's value as well. I REALLY wish it was a better iScreen. Taller? Meh...

For my needs these days, it's the right choice. I've had far more android things than ios things...but the hardware quality itself just isn't there IMO. Great specs, crap resale and quality.
i only buy Motorola for that reason exactly. i work with a bunch of bleeding-edgers, and when i wanted to try my first Android phone, almost every one said the hardware quality for Motorola was heads and shoulders above the others. after holding a bunch of phones in the store, owning two Motorola devices, and watching some other friends' devices break, i now share their opinion. the only other brand i've even consider is Samsung, and probably just on tablets.

I think you misread. I said it would have been a disappointment if it did not come with those...

All I'm saying is that iPhone is not longer the only kid on the block with the features it has. Many have caught up...many by copying/following on it's success. It makes the job all the more difficult for Apple to keep up with the expectations.

Don't get me wrong. My wife has an iPhone 4...and I may get her the iPhone 5...because she LOVES her iPhone....and I can see why. However, there are a LOT more good choices these days than there were even a year back...

Please back this up with facts?
First, I am not an Apple fan boy.. but I do appreciate good technology. I know a lot of people that use Android just because they are anti Apple or Anti Microsoft or Anti Mainstream. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some opinions aren't worthy when they dont give opposing products a fair chance.

Apple nailed it with iOS - its easy to use, that anyone can use it. Best of all Apps! Prior to using iOS I've used Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Web OS and Android, so I am confident that iOS is a great os for a mobile phone.

#1 Problem with most Android Devices is - Battery Life. I am not saying that my battery life is awesome with the iPhone but it is a lot better than the Evo 4g I use to own. I even got my sister a Nexus S, hoping it will outlive the Evo but that wasn't the case. She switched to an iPhone 4 this past May.

#2 Apps - Yes Android does have a lot of apps now but they don't looks as nice as iOS. All apps possess the same usability qualities in iOS. On the Android apps at times are confusing to use. I was able to manage but not so good for the rest of my family.

#3 Widgets - I love that you can have widgets on Android.. but only to find that your phone's battery will get drained. When I had the evo I had to kill all the widgets as it was killing my battery life.

#4 Functional - This I will throw out and call it a tie. Android is as functional as iOS but usability is another category.

#5 Usable - iOS, hands down is the best OS for a phone. It just works. It has everything you need a mobile device to be. Apps run beautifully on the OS and there is no complex screens. I would like to note I would fail both OS's with their setting screen. It is difficult to find certain setting in both OS's

#6 Hardware - iPhone is a beautiful device, its not made out of flimsy plastic. You actually feel like you bought something nice. Appeal should be important to any device maker because all the android devices I've seen have just been a disappointment. Another thing Apple nails is form factor. iPhone may have been stuck at 3.5" longer than other devices but really what is the point of a 4.5" screen?? If all these device manufactures are packing Android with the latest and greatest technology why do they fail to address the battery issues??

Again - These are my opinions based on my experiences. I do like the Android OS for a tablet, but not for a Phone. It almost feels like bloatware at times with just too much going on. Look forward to reading your response.

Cheers!

My Galaxy Nexus from Verizon gets a full day of emailing and talking on the phone. I work in outside sales so I am on the phone at least 3~4 hours a day. I also get about 50 emails a day. I use it daily for GPS also. I charge it in the morning and put it on the charger at night. Don't need to plug it in during the day.

#2 Apps - Yes Android does have a lot of apps now but they don't looks as nice as iOS. All apps possess the same usability qualities in iOS. On the Android apps at times are confusing to use. I was able to manage but not so good for the rest of my family.

Apps are apps, you can find 3~4 different apps to do the same thing. I would call this a tie.

#3 Widgets - I love that you can have widgets on Android.. but only to find that your phone's battery will get drained. When I had the evo I had to kill all the widgets as it was killing my battery life.

I have about 4 pages of icons and widgets, see my battery life in #1

#4 Functional - This I will throw out and call it a tie. Android is as functional as iOS but usability is another category.

Also a tie in my book

All my widgets just work also, everything is setup for ease. NFC tags in and out of my office, also in my car. All my settings and profile are on NFC tags, I don't have to find all these settings.

#6 Hardware - iPhone is a beautiful device, its not made out of flimsy plastic. You actually feel like you bought something nice. Appeal should be important to any device maker because all the android devices I've seen have just been a disappointment. My experience with the iPhone 4s, and the biggest problem I returned it in a week, is that you cannot take one attachment copy and paste it into a new email. Come on, in sales I need to do this with many emails.

Cheers!

Thats awesome you get a full day. And probably the difference might be that you are on Verizon, you have a superb carrier.. I went cheap and have Sprint.

I agree with iOS mailing client.. hoping iOS 6 improves a lot of that. Attachments drive me nuts!
