Tablet for a 9 year old?

I'm not sure where to post this...so I hope I chose the correct forum. I am looking to get my son a tablet for Christmas. The thing is I have no idea at what tablet to even start looking at. I would like it to be below $300.00. He will use it mainly for playing games and watching tv or movies. I would like to be able to download a lot of movies so we can get rid of the old portable dvd player and dvd case when taking long car trips.
Essentially I want it to replace the whole DVD issue as they are a hassle in the car and keep him from always draining my battery on my Evo. We don't need to download books as we have a kindle.
If it could stream netflix that would be great too.
I appreciate any suggestions....I have been looking at the google nexus tablet but am not sure if it's the best tablet for my son as I want to download a lot of movies.

I just re-read thread and i'll stick with my original post, no this isn't a valid reason to have a tablet sitting around.
and kids don't need to be force feed movies while driving, why don't they look out the window and enjoy the scenery, or enjoy the radio and socialize with the family, instead of being put in a vegetative state of needing to be entertained with TV 24/7

We're experiencing delays on our shipment as most people have noticed. This shipment was set to arrive last week however Customs intercepted our orders and decided to hold them. In response to this we pulled out the mass of our shipments and resent them in smaller batches. At this time our first batch has just passed through ACH (Automated Clearing House) in Customs which means they have been released. We're aware that everyone has been patiently waiting for their products and we appreciate it.
As always you're free to cancel your orders and wait for actual release. Having said that once the shipment arrives we will be shipping orders by the date they were placed so doing this would place you at the end of the list. Once orders have been shipped tracking information will be provided via the email used in Google Wallet.
The fastest way to get updates concerning these tablets up until shipping in via email as it's more accessible. Thanks again for your patience.

I followed up with asking if the tablets I ordered would arrive before Christmas and was told they would arrive "well before December."
