Yeah, that sounds like a huge pain though. Having to mess with the settings and restarting the spin cycle and whatnot. You could always try craigslist instead of getting a brand new one.
That's what we've done the past 10 years and it always works out very cheaply.
We got this set when we moved a few weeks ago:
It was in immaculate condition and both work like a dream.
They got shiny new ones, and just wanted the old ones gone. I haven't figured out if I'm going to get NEW new or just new to me.

With a 12 months same as cash (or even 6), that might be a good plan, so I wouldn't have to divert holiday funds.

Yeah, same thing with the set I got. People are all into those super expensive, front-loading ones. I'm not jumping on that bandwagon, not when I get a perfectly nice working set for 1/10th the cost.
Do you do most of the laundry at your house?

I've heard too many concerns about front-loaders failing sooner/more often than top loaders to go that route.
i had a pair/wore them forever/replaced heel at a point
so
make certain you can get heel protectors on first thing, otherwise it's gonna cost ya
or metal taps, more durable & snake proof
for the cowboy on the top/fancy man on the bottom style

you can woo dh w/a tap dance too! & you'll be all "get smart" w/metal taps
