I really like the relaxed nature of 4H (compared to Boy Scouts, our troop is almost like the Army), but the downside is stuff like this.
One of my sons took archery last year.. They had a program, we didn't get the word about it until it was too late (maybe it was our fault as noobies, we didn't track it down) so he ended up doing the program on his own. He still had fun though.

He did about half a year of cub scouts, but he quit when he realized it wasn't camping every weekend, the projects were stupid, and all they talked about was global warming.

Cub scouts is a hard program to run (boy scouts is better, the kids are older and more independent).

I was a cub scout leader for all my sons .. not for all 4.5 years, but I took a shift.. here's the problem.

Most parents don't want to participate at all. Want to dump their kids and leave.

When I was a kid, if a cub scout did not finish all the requirements for that years' badge (wolf, bear, etc), it was no big deal, he just didn't get the badge.. Now, EVERYONE has to earn the badge every year. I guess it's so there's no hurt feelings.. BUT none of the parents want to work on it at all.. So most of the time, we spent a chunk of the meetings working on the damn badges, doing all the busy work.

We're up north, so not a lot of good weather to do outdoor stuff. In the fall, meet at like 7 pm, gets dark and cold fast.. In the spring, everyone is burnt out and doesn't really want to do anything.

I hope this doesn't feel defensive.. it's not.. but it's really hard (if not impossible) to do a good Cub Scout program. I am sure most of the parents thought my program sucked.

I have a spreadsheet that I just created for a client to start using in January. It's basically just a summary/snapshot of all of my client's resources each day. I have 3 things I'd like to do to this spreadsheet, and I'm hoping they are as simple as I think they are.
  1. Create a macro that runs when you open the sheet and prompts you to clear the data from certain fields.
  2. Create another prompt/pop-up box that asks if you'd like to populate the spreadsheet with values located in another sheet (so this macro will need to access another spreadsheet on our server).
  3. When I save the document (which means I'm done), I'd like it to prompt me and tell me if I forgot to populate certain fields, aka left them blank and without a value in them. It can still save the document, just give me a pop-up box that says "Hey you forgot to populate Cell D7!"
  4. Just because I like #4.
I take it you don't know VBA? The macro recorder could probably get you started for number one, but I can't think of anyway you can accomplish those without using VBA code....

Sounds like you need someone to do some VBA for you. Any time our department gets requests for this, I pawn it off on someone else, so I can't really help.

I would if I knew anything about it, but I can hardly do a simple spreadsheet because I'm the most untechnical IT guy ever.

Not at all. It was ridiculous how many parents just dropped their kids and left. I wound up in every session, lesson, and whatever just because I stuck around to see what he was doing and the parent leading had never done it before. I found that it was more or less for kids without structure in their lives to teach them structure instead of an extracurricular activity to learn new things.

I just steal VBA scripts from somebody's blog when I need one. One of these days that'll probably bite me in the ass if I grab one that doesn't do what it says it does. laugh out loud

Now if you want a .bat script I might be your guy... but I don't think a batch is gonna do what you want to do there. I bet somebody at that Excel forum can figure it out though, seriously. I've sent tons of users there because they always think their IT guy automatically knows everything about every program or piece of software on a computer just because it's on a computer but we don't really. I sometimes tell people I'm just a higher belt in the Google-Fu. Wink

1 and 3 should be pretty simple to do code wise, but for 2 it is best you have someone from the office involved. Are you sending this out to customers? Does that server have unsecured access? Moving the spreadsheet from computer to computer may also break the code in regards to number 2 depending on how the server is set up.

If I had (or find) some spare time I'd take a crack at 1 and 3 for you...

I would... But I have class. I just spent a good 4-5 hours on excel last night tinkering with a project.
