I was just CHARGED for trying on a pair of shoes. UPDATE ON POST #431

3,281 756 June 22, 2007 at 12:00 PM in Chat
Okay so today I went into a running store to try on some shoes. I'm in the very BEGINNING of my search for new shoes and I just wanted to try on a few brands that were new to me and see if anything was going on with my foot. So I go into this store, the kid asks me if I'd ever been there before.. I said NO.. I said I was looking for shoes.. he says okay great and asks me to take walk in front of him for him to look at my stride/ gate. I do, it takes 2 minutes for him to determine that I'm mostly neutral/ slight overpronator. I try on TWO pairs of shoes. I tell him okay great, I'm going to look around, I might come back. I don't know. I don't know and I don't BS, its as simple as that. I might come back I might not for the shoes. I'm an informed shopper and I next to NEVER buy things on impulse. Then his attitude changed. He starts giving me this schpeel about how they're a high end running store and they take pride in fitting their customers with shoes and if I don't buy the shoes right then and there he was going to have to charge me $20 for the less than 10 minutes of time and two pairs of shoes I tried on. I asked him if he was freakin kidding me. The lady manager had to come over.. APPARENTLY, on the OTHER SIDE of the boxes of shoes he was stacking next to me was a sheet of laminated PAPER that said about this policy, in a not so very large font size. Okay so why did he NOT tell me about this when he asked me if I had ever been in the store? I clearly said no. Why did he let me walk in front of him and and spend the two minutes looking at my feet and not tell me this? I paid the $20 and left. And I know they talked about me when I left.. you could feel it in the air as I was paying. And I just know they were all like "Oh I hate when people do that.. " when in reality they should LOVE it.. $20 PURE PROFIT for under 10 minutes of time! They didn't tell me about this upfront and they stacked the shoes next to the piece of paper that said this. I couldn't even see it!
So I was thinking should I file a report with like BBB? I think $20 is a lot of money for merely trying on a pair of shoes and less than 10 minutes of time especially since I wasn't told about it upfront. I'm a girl and I've tried on my fair share of shoes in my lifetime and NEVER been charged for trying them on.

What do you guys think I should do? Nothing, something? I might just let it go.. but for right now I'm Mad

Sorry I meant to click the RANT icon not chat.. I don't know how that happened.

Do you still have your receipt? Tell them you are not satisfied with trying on those shoes so you want your money back, here's their policy:
http://www.humanracesports.com/on...licies.php

We want you to be happy with your purchase from us! If for any reason you are not satisfied, you may return your purchase with receipt within 14 days for exchange or store credit. Returned items must be in brand new condition with all original tags or other accessories included. Any item that has been used, or damaged will be refused. Shipping charges for items returned are the responsibility of the customer.

If you have purchased shoes from us, try them on and walk or run on a carpeted surface. Please be considerate- if returning a pair of shoes, please use the original shipping container or a separate box. Please do not simply use the shoe box. This damages the product.

I parked outside my sister's dorm, same place I always did...
The owner of the lot put a boot on every car in the lot... (long story about the ownership changing and the residents did not know)

The new Parking company took credit cards.. I paid to get my sister's car, her roomies and mine unbooted.

Visa reversed all charges when I told them that I was basically a Victim of extortion.

So.. Call Discover and start 'splaining

Seriously though, that's the store's intent....to rip off ppl who try on their shoes because most don't want trouble and will just pay that totally illegal charge. By the way, it IS illegal because they didn't inform you before letting you try on their shoes. Normal practice is that patrons can try on merchandise for free. If that store chooses to charge patrons/customers, then they have to make sure that the the customer was made aware of that policy. A tiny sign behind the counter is NOT informed consent!

I'm certain that any judge in small claims court would agree.

WOW! I just can't believe that at all. $20.00 to try on a pair of shoes? The shoes are prolly so overpriced that noone buys them so in order to stay in business they need to charge a fitting fee or whatever you want to call it. That is such bs.

Thanks. I'm going to call my CC today and see what happens. If they reverse the charge ( I don't know do they do it right then and there over the phone?) that is all I will do. No need to contact the store at that point.

Its probably easier anyway to do that than it would have been to argue with them in the store, as much as I wish I could go back and not pay, that seriously would have been a big hassle. Probably would have been accused of stealing and created a big scene. Ugh... oh how I love big scenes. Why did I not do it.. yummy

i just called them, pretended to me ..well nm...

they say its posted all around the store as signs/etc (i cant tell casue its 1000 miles from me lol) and that every salesman informs customers of this

reason they charge the $20 is basically because: people come in, try the shoes, listen for advice, don't buy the shoes and take their knowledge (as i hear this i tell her to ....... in my mind) to a different store and buy the shoes there. so the $20 is to protect themselves

they also said, that if you comeback (hahahahah) and buy the shoe from them, they will deduct the $20 .........

so if u decide to return, u can tell them this 'sexy guy with european accent' said he spoke to supervisor and she said to do that

Stealing what, time? Since you stole 10 minutes, you should offer them 20 minutes back, that seems fair.

they also have camera's and if you are accused of stealing, editing footage after the fact=illegal (tampering with evidence)
