I was just CHARGED for trying on a pair of shoes. UPDATE ON POST #431

3,281 756 June 22, 2007 at 12:00 PM in Chat
Okay so today I went into a running store to try on some shoes. I'm in the very BEGINNING of my search for new shoes and I just wanted to try on a few brands that were new to me and see if anything was going on with my foot. So I go into this store, the kid asks me if I'd ever been there before.. I said NO.. I said I was looking for shoes.. he says okay great and asks me to take walk in front of him for him to look at my stride/ gate. I do, it takes 2 minutes for him to determine that I'm mostly neutral/ slight overpronator. I try on TWO pairs of shoes. I tell him okay great, I'm going to look around, I might come back. I don't know. I don't know and I don't BS, its as simple as that. I might come back I might not for the shoes. I'm an informed shopper and I next to NEVER buy things on impulse. Then his attitude changed. He starts giving me this schpeel about how they're a high end running store and they take pride in fitting their customers with shoes and if I don't buy the shoes right then and there he was going to have to charge me $20 for the less than 10 minutes of time and two pairs of shoes I tried on. I asked him if he was freakin kidding me. The lady manager had to come over.. APPARENTLY, on the OTHER SIDE of the boxes of shoes he was stacking next to me was a sheet of laminated PAPER that said about this policy, in a not so very large font size. Okay so why did he NOT tell me about this when he asked me if I had ever been in the store? I clearly said no. Why did he let me walk in front of him and and spend the two minutes looking at my feet and not tell me this? I paid the $20 and left. And I know they talked about me when I left.. you could feel it in the air as I was paying. And I just know they were all like "Oh I hate when people do that.. " when in reality they should LOVE it.. $20 PURE PROFIT for under 10 minutes of time! They didn't tell me about this upfront and they stacked the shoes next to the piece of paper that said this. I couldn't even see it!
So I was thinking should I file a report with like BBB? I think $20 is a lot of money for merely trying on a pair of shoes and less than 10 minutes of time especially since I wasn't told about it upfront. I'm a girl and I've tried on my fair share of shoes in my lifetime and NEVER been charged for trying them on.

What do you guys think I should do? Nothing, something? I might just let it go.. but for right now I'm Mad

Sorry I meant to click the RANT icon not chat.. I don't know how that happened.

You should have wiped your ass with the sign, I am assuming that is why it is laminated laugh out loud

So let's just say I put up a sign that says anyone who walks through my front door has to pay me $10.00 bucks. What law dictates you actually have to pay it? Anyone can put up a sign.Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)
I have a laminated sign next to me saying if you respond to my post you owe me 20 bucks. Pay up bitches Grin

I just got off the phone with my credit card (Discover) and they said I have to wait a few days for the charge to post and then call back. I explained what happened.. they'll probably help me. I'm not gonna go buy the shoes because it says

We want you to be happy with your purchase from us! If for any reason you are not satisfied, you may return your purchase with receipt within 14 days for exchange or store credit.

I don't want an exchange or store credit. I didn't even want to buy the shoes from them right then and there. I might have gone back for them but at this point no way. Oh the guy even gave me this schpeel out of nowhere saying if I went somewhere and namely said THE INTERNET.. that I should beware that any "running" shoes I buy on the INTERNET (he kept saying the INTERNET like it was diseased) are more than likely reject shoes sent back from stores due to returns, not being able to sell, ect ect... WHAT? I mean.. just .. WHAT?
And he said I would have a hell of a hard time finding the Mizuno's I liked anywhere else (namely my LARGE foot size Mad ). I just found them online at like 5 different places for $40 less.

Oh Doh I missed that part. Yeah...definitely don't buy them just to return them..I agree. Sounds like a crappy store all around. They are only out to make a quick buck and will take it however they can get it. (ie...scamming you out of money). I'm glad it sounds like Discover will help you out Smilie I'd like to see their faces when they see the chargeback, lol.

I would definitely call your local news station and have them do a story on it.

You know...if you have a camera phone you could have taken a picture of the sign hidden behind the shoes.

"Ok..I'll pay. Just give me a second..I need to take this picture to help me with my investigation" laugh out loud

I'm wondering if it really matters if they have the signs or not. As far as I know they only had the one and it was a small piece of paper. I just think the sales boy should have TOLD me up front. I mean what if I couldn't read? Is it a crime to be illiterate? Sign schmine.. he should have TOLD me.
Hmm.. I can't dwell on this all day, it was part my stupid mistake and part their bad business practices.
Thanks for your responses everyone! I will post with any outcome Smilie

I would think the sign is important..though I totally agree he should have told you. But think about stores that have signs that say things "$25 fee for bounced checks"...they don't TELL you that they'll charge you for a bounced check but because they have the sign they'd be able to charge you for it anyway.

Good luck with getting your money back...I think you will be able to. I know I'd probably dwell on this for awhile too if I were you just because it's so annoying, lol.

I would have walked out of the store without paying. They cannot charge you with anything. A sign on a box somewhere would not pass court because they would have to prove beyond a doubt that you read the policy and understood it.

Should have asked if the $20 was a flat fee or charged by the minute. If a flat fee, I'd have told them I had all day and planned on trying on every shoe in the store, at least a dozen times, that I have narcolepsy and fart in my sleep, and that my husband left me because I talk incessantly (when I'm not sleeping and farting). Then I'd order pizza.

Do what I'd do.

Go get an index card, punch out a little hole. Get a string put it through the hole and knot it.

Then write on the card:

I charge $50 to let someone fit me for shoes.

Go back in there get fitted and demand either they give you your damn $20 back or they'll have to abide by your policy.

Seriously though, I'd never would have paid and if it is not on the door and all through the store and verbally told to you (what if you can't read?) there is no agreement to the policy.
