[S]United[/S] States of America

[I want to preface this by saying this is not meant to be a thread throwing blame at one side or the other...there's an entire different section for that. This is just to get people's feedback on recent news....]

Never thought I'd use the words secession and viral in the same sentence, but that seems to be the trend on Facebook and Twitter over the last few days. It seems as though the government has received petition requests from at least 40 states (different articles report different stats) and over 700,000 people and steadily rising.

I'm just happy to see that people are finally making the progression from backroom murmur and rumblings to now be willing to sternly voice their displeasure with our current system. I don't know that a secession will actually happen, but I do believe that this is a step in the right direction for the people to pave their own futures.

It's actually hard to find results from the larger known media outlets as they don't even seem to be reporting on it.

it's the same government coming up with these things as the ones you mentioned.
Don't forget that this is also the government that has control of the media so that stories that happened prior to election day that would have had a bearing on things were held until after the election. And conspiracy/scandal caused the testimony of the head of the CIA to be irrelevant since he resigned.

I've not said that the government has never done anything good. However, I will reply with NDAA, DHS, CISPA, SOPA, Patriot Act, etc. Google any of these and ask yourself if rights aren't being hindered. Also, you can browse through this as well...

Providing housing/jobs/cars/food to everyone is "in the interest of the people". It does mean it's the federal government's job to do these things. The federal government should do those things that states can't do (such as defending from foreign enemies) or are otherwise enumerated in the Constitution. Why can't states that want to institute health care like Massachusetts? If they do and I want that, I can move there and still have the basic rights granted to me as a citizen. If I don't want that level of government, I can choose to live in a different state, and still have those rights.

Wait...so the government is OPRAH?.Confused

the main flaw in your analogy is the second sentence, " everyone else on the team realizes they have a good league", because I think the vast majority of people think the "league" is farked up. A better analogy would be...there's a league in which the rules are made and amended by a single team. The umpires/referees/officials are selected by this single team. The score is kept by members of that single team. Who do you think is going to make it to the playoffs every year? Does this sound like a fair playing field to you, or would you agree that the cards are stacked in one team's favor?
i agree everyone has some issue with the government (and justifiable ones), but my point is that only a tiny minority think that it's bad enough that we actually need to seriously secede. and based on my experiences, while everyone sees something wrong with the government, i don't accept that the majority think it's as terrible as you suggest.
Quote from Landers :
I think my main point is that it's not a serious discussion about secession (at least not to me or anyone else I've spoken to), but rather simply a statement to the US Gov't that people are upset and are not content with the status quo.
unfortunately, there are actually people around here (where i live) for whom this is a serious issue. they are the ones i am mostly addressing.

and my suggestion for those who are creating these petitions knowing they will do nothing is that they might want to find a more effective/less ridiculous way to make their point.

I've mentioned numerous times that I don't think seceding is really the preferred end result...but it definitely does send a message to the government. And as for the minority/majority comment, I also think that a lot of people aren't really informed on things going on around them because their only source of news comes from tainted wells.

My challenge to you (or anyone else) is to google any of those keywords I mentioned in post 58, use a variety of different sources to read up on them, and then see if your perspective on things shifts just a tad.

president bush won with less of the electoral college, and i think less of a margin in the popular vote than president obama. there's been a lot of right wing overreaction, ie the run on ammunition after president obama was elected. it never manifested and a lot of right wings paid a lot more than needed over irrational fears.

i'd be glad to vote for a republican who's a moderate and true the original party ideal of less government, fiscal conservatism.
