[S]United[/S] States of America

[I want to preface this by saying this is not meant to be a thread throwing blame at one side or the other...there's an entire different section for that. This is just to get people's feedback on recent news....]

Never thought I'd use the words secession and viral in the same sentence, but that seems to be the trend on Facebook and Twitter over the last few days. It seems as though the government has received petition requests from at least 40 states (different articles report different stats) and over 700,000 people and steadily rising.

I'm just happy to see that people are finally making the progression from backroom murmur and rumblings to now be willing to sternly voice their displeasure with our current system. I don't know that a secession will actually happen, but I do believe that this is a step in the right direction for the people to pave their own futures.

It's actually hard to find results from the larger known media outlets as they don't even seem to be reporting on it.

Now I will answer this seriously. Of course I know what greed is. I see it every single day just on slickdeals. Did you see all the people stealing serial numbers in order to get a free year of netflix? On top of that, they were selling the ones they stole to other people on slickdeals. Greed exists no matter where you are. And people will always be power hungry. Some people get off to power.

The same people that complain they will have to pay more taxes are the same people that abuse companies such as LG and Netflix. In order to make things work everyone has to do their part. My opinion still stands if someone is unhappy with America, they are free to leave any time. They don't want that though. You can not have your cake and eat it too. You either want to make things better or make things worse. Those are the options for each person to decide.

Or...what if we were to keep America, but remove the tumors that run it? I've mentioned before that even though my rants may come across as unpatriotic, that is the furthest thing from the truth. I'd like nothing more than to see this country live up to it's potential...but it cannot happen in it's current state (no pun intended).

But do you only feel that way because a mixed breed is President? Would you have still felt this way if Romney won? Honestly I agree the system is flawed but a secession isn't what is really needed at this time.

Check my posts...I think both parties are a crock....bought and paid for. And I've also mentioned that a secession is probably not the desired outcome, but I bet it gets all of Washington shitting in their pants just a 'lil.

president bush won with less of the electoral college, and i think less of a margin in the popular vote than president obama. there's been a lot of right wing overreaction, ie the run on ammunition after president obama was elected. it never manifested and a lot of right wings paid a lot more than needed over irrational fears.

i'd be glad to vote for a republican who's a moderate and true the original party ideal of less government, fiscal conservatism.
I completely agree. My voting these days is simply fiscal. I don't care about most of the major social issues. I voted for R/R this time because I felt that he had a better shot of turning our fiscal problems around than Obama does. Maybe I'll eat my words and Obama will do a good job; Who knows?

I simply want this country to get back to where it was founded. Limited gov't interference and a gov't by the people for the people. We've strayed so far from that over the years.. It's incredibly sad.

lol. Silly people who don't understand politics. A petition will do squat. For a state to legally secede, they have to have a convention and all the citizens of that state have to vote on a measure. It's the same way they entered the union. None of these states will ever get a majority of people to agree with such a crazy scheme.

Not to mention, if any of these states seceded, they'd be immediately cut off. I'm pretty sure the US Government would blockade the state (after all, to receive trade they'd have to pass over US borders). All the citizens would have to get passports. I'm sure a large portion of people would move out, which means they'd hemorrage tax income. Kiss medicare, social security, and any other government programs goodbye. Say goodbye to government subsidies on farming.

No. Sorry. These people clearly have not thought this through. These are just people upset because their candidate lost and they have forgotten that living in a democracy means you don't always get your way if you're in the minority.

Obama is in a tricky position. For one thing, he didn't create this deficit. Obama's policies are only responsible for 8% of the deficit. At the moment, he's basically faced with the choice of shrinking the deficit, or boosting the economy. He can't really do both. Either he raises taxes and cuts entitlements (which will shrink the deficit but hurt the economy) or he leaves taxes alone and lets the economy recover while letting the deficit grow. It's not an easy decision.

For shitz and giggles click here [whitehouse.gov]. You will see how silly some of these people are. They also forget that most sites log your IP address. If Obama wanted to be an asshole he could get them for treason.

Would you mind explaining your reasoning why? I'm not arguing...just asking. My opinion is no more valuable than yours or vice versa...maybe you have a point/reason I haven't considered.
I'm just now seeing this thread and didn't read through it in it's entirety so I apologize for not know which side of the discussion you are on.

The only thing that I am curious about is the money aspect, especially for states that may have low or no income taxes.

In the extremely unlikely scenario of secession:
  • How are all the lost federal dollars being replaced? Do they think that 1 state could sustain itself?
  • Since the US military will be "taking their ball and going home" and leave Texas with nothing, What is their military going to be comprised of and how will it be financed?
  • On the same military topic, since the US borders will now retract to the new US border location, what will stop Mexico from coming in and taking over? Will they they ask for help from the United States?

I'm sure I could think of other questions but it's early in the day Smilie Also, once again, I'm not sure where you stand with your opinion. Just wanted to ask a few questions.

Exactly what about those petitions is equal to: "The betrayal of one's own country by waging war against it or by consciously or purposely acting to aid its enemies"?
