[I want to preface this by saying this is not meant to be a thread throwing blame at one side or the other...there's an entire different section for that. This is just to get people's feedback on recent news....]

Never thought I'd use the words secession and viral in the same sentence, but that seems to be the trend on Facebook and Twitter over the last few days. It seems as though the government has received petition requests from at least 40 states (different articles report different stats) and over 700,000 people and steadily rising.

I'm just happy to see that people are finally making the progression from backroom murmur and rumblings to now be willing to sternly voice their displeasure with our current system. I don't know that a secession will actually happen, but I do believe that this is a step in the right direction for the people to pave their own futures.

It's actually hard to find results from the larger known media outlets as they don't even seem to be reporting on it.

The letter sounds pretty damn egotistical to me. Sure it probably expresses the views of a lot of people, but all it conveys is a condescending tone such that anything not "governed" and "protected" by the US government is doomed to failure. There seem to be a lot of countries out in the world that are doing just fine without the US government...some even doing much better than us in varying aspects.

And as for the second pic...so someone snapped a picture when the people were likely just getting themselves organized (which you can infer from the guy looking down at the sign), and then all the propaganda specialists run with it as if to say, "look at these guys...they're dumb...hahaha". I know that both of you guys are smarter than this. Why perpetuate this propoganda? I'm sure both of you can find much more valid points for supporting your disagreeing opinions than just following along with what the rest of the "dimwits" (quoting MMM) out there already do.
1) All that letter does is point out many of the consequences to secession that these people calling for it have probably never even considered.

2) The picture is funny. I like posting funny pictures. You don't have to get all butthurt about it.

The point of the sarcastic letter is that there are a lot of benefits to belonging to this union that secessionists (is that a word?) overlook. There are a lot of valid points in that letter if you look past the sarcasm.

True. I also think some of the problems now stem from lack of communication. I just think people tend to jump the gun too quickly. Don't worry I am on my own side and I have cookies. Whee But hypothetically speaking, What if Obama took these secessions seriously? What would these people do then? Would they actually be happy if they got what they asked for?
Ooohhhh...I can be persuaded with cookies...wait....no...dammit..now I'm a politician.

I don't think secession will ever truly happen (at least not now), for many reasons. However, for the sake of speaking hypothetically, if it did actually happen, I think the result would be akin to any huge undergoing of change. At first there would be turmoil, panic, small revolts and fights against one another. Next would come acceptance and the realization that if they had any chance of making it as an independent entity, they were going to have to come together somehow. Then some sort of leadership would be established...whether or not it mimicked some form of our current government, or something completely different, is impossible to determine. Then new laws would be formed. And finally, just like with any other country, they would engage in trade/business with surrounding countries.

The main one being protection from possible foreign invaders, which is a valid function of the federal government. Personally, I think the military should be ~50% of the federal budget, with the rest split up among all other programs.

I agree completely. Every single one of the points is valid. However, as with life, tone is everything. And the tone is one that purposely attempts to sound egotistical, as though nothing would be able to survive without the US. So when using such items as a basis to a debate, it undermines the valid points which the letter makes, IMO.

Yikes....I even think 50% is still a lot. In the last ~400 years, who has really farked with us (on a major scale, like invasion)? The wars that we get into are ones that we stick our noses in, only to find that the reasoning for going to war was based on false assumptions and falsified facts...as referenced by our recent history. So, if we could learn to keep our noses out of everyone else's business, then we wouldn't need such a huge military. The need of military grows proportionally to a lacking education, IMO.

If it were up to me, military would be 50% of a MUCH smaller federal budget - maybe 1/10th of what it is today.

I'm not looking to pick a fight or disagree with anybody's views (we have the Podium for that). I gave my question\concerns in my first post and I am now just making light of the situation. Since we all understand that this will never happen then we might as well enjoy life in the Lounge.

We aren't going downhill any longer. The downward motion stopped when we hit rock bottom.
