After many years of hoopdie cars..I'm going to get a new one...that last 400 dollar radiator did me in on my little car...and with a soon to be 2xxlb 6 foot tall son and a BF its time to get a larger nicer car....I've been driving a 87 crx...so I need more room!
Hondas are my first choice...
I narrowed it to the 2012 EXL 2.4 i owned a 01 with leather and dang it I want that again...moonroof I can do without..but I like the alloy wheels and it does get decent gas mileage
Found one at the dealer with 62xx miles..they wanted 25909..also comes with 100000 honda certified warranty.
Kbb trade in is 21818..,no problems with carfax..and it was sold originally by this dealer and stayed pretty much in this area its been at dealer for about a month...
I have financing at 4.73 with 84 months if over 20000 dollars..I am going to look into refinancing in the future at lower rate. I also get 90 day delay on first payment...
I also average 7000 mi a year..I've been renting cars for out of town trips..family is about 5 hr drive...I see them about 3 to 4 times a year...but I'm thinking more now with newer wheels!
I am ready for pros and cons! I am planning on running this to 200000 miles or more!
Oh and where is the car advice thread? I need to rehearse and get ready to deal with dealer...

This is for anyone else who is a newbie to buying cars:
When you get pre-approved for an auto loan like I was, they will give you a sheet of paper that goes something like this, "StevenQ has been pre-approved for the purchase of a used car up to $15,000 by Patelco Credit Union". There will be a phone number they can use to verify that you are indeed pre-approved. You don't tell the salesman to go look it up. If the credit union doesn't provide you with such a sheet, keep a phone number handy so they can easily call to verify your pre-approval.
Also, you want to have all your ducks lined up. You should already have a good idea what price you will pay for the vehicle, you should already have an idea of the KBB price, and typical sales price, and draw a line in the sand. Make sure you look at the Carfax to see if the car has been in an accident or totaled.
If they ask you for your SS number you don't have to give it to them. I gave it to them anyways because they wouldn't shut up about it and I wanted to speed the process up. So they found a better rate and I told them that I was still going with Patelco's rate at 3.15% for 60 months. Doing the credit pull doesn't really hurt you so I wasn't too worried about it. In hindsight I should have gone with the rate they provided but it was my first ever car purchase and I didn't know what I was doing.
Have you looked at a Hyundai Sonata
"With last year's family-sedan pick, the Nissan Altima, due for a redesign soon, we chose the four-cylinder Sonata as a more affordable alternative to the Camry Hybrid. For less than $22,000, the Sonata provides a roomy, well-equipped cabin, supple ride, nimble handling, and thrifty 27 mpg overall. And despite its swoopy, coupelike styling, the Sonata still provides decent rear-seat room and rear visibility, unlike many other cars today." Price: $21,800.
It's in your price range and got great reviews from CR. For your kind of money, you have options outside the Honda.
Subaru Impreza and Hyundai Sonata to start.
I would make sure you qualify for their low interest at Honda before you purchase. If you're concerned I would look at qualifying for a loan at your bank or credit union first. Penfed has loans for used cars around 1.49%

With some car companies the warranty will only transfer to a certain number of owners. So if you are buying a used car it has already been transferred and could be a problem if you decide to sell it after a few years.
Also, with new car dealerships, sometimes you can get even better deals if you go in on the last day of the month. That is because they have certain quotas they have to meet every month in order to get certain bonuses from corporate. For example, if Honda dealership XYZ needs to sell 100 cars in a month to meet the quota and on the last day of the month they have only sold 99 cars, they will be going crazy trying to sell one more car. They may even be willing to lose money on a car because as long as they get to 100 sales then they will get an extra $500 per car as a bonus - and that is more important than the price of one silly car.
They kept saying that they needed my monthly income to complete the paperwork..I said "I already completed an application"...so he went back into room to do something..other guy comes out ( guy i test drove with) chit chatted a bit..talked about kids ect...then he stood up and as he was leaving said "oh what was your monthly income again?"
I said "I told the other man that I already gave that info to bank..and why do i need to do it again?"
He leaves..then comes with other guy who has a paper with price and payment info...and chitchated some more and pretty much wanted me to agree to what was on paper....ok i hate to admit it but i kinda squealed..."Noooo, I am not going to pay that!" The guy said "oh you want to pay more?" I said "No!....less! We haven't agreed to a price yet!"
He looks at test drive guy and says "Oh, i didnt know that"
Anyway, there is no reason to fill out ANY paperwork EVER at the dealership until you have agreed on a price. Why would you fill out paperwork when you don't have an agreement? You may think it's harmless, but it is the opposite. When you start filling out and talking about paperwork and applications it tells the salesman that you really want this particular car and you are willing to pay his price. He's not going to negotiate to his best price anymore.
Also, when you start discussing paperwork you have to give him IMPORTANT information that you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT HIM TO HAVE. What's so important? Financing. Under no circumstances do you want him to realize that you have outside financing until after you have agreed on a price. The dealer makes lots of money off financing. When you tell him you are pre-approved what he hears is that he will make less money in this transaction and he shouldn't give you his best price. You want him to give you the best price before financing discussions come up because then he can't raise the price when he finds out your are financing through someone else (it would be illegal and he could get in a lot of trouble). If they press you about seeing if you qualify before going further then just say there is no need to check because you have good credit and you are confident you will have no problem with financing.
I pretty much told him that was my offer..
Also, I agree with what others have said about only talking to salespeople by email and phone initially. Taking a test drive takes time. You really want to have all the particulars and pricing nailed down, and pick your car, before you walk in to the dealership and then you just go for the test drive to make sure everything is as represented. They can't put any pressure on you over the phone or by email and they know it.
The GLS should be under 20K - around 18 or so.
Are you looking at the Limited? It's got everything imaginable on it but it runs 20K. True car value is 20,900.

I ll say lets do price of car first...then talk about financing....i did think i would get better price if financing was in place first.......I have to be ready for their pouting though if i can haggle to a good price and then they not making it up in the financing....
And I have fax number of bank that did my preapproval ..so " if they cant find it in system" ...like at the elantra dealer they can call for it that way. That did kinda throw me off a bit the first time. We hadn't come to an agreement on price at that point...both things were going on at same time. It was confusing....
I bought a little notebook to keep me straight..so many numbers and cars!

If you get it 300 under invoice, you are looking at 20600.

Are you checking out the Edmund's TMV? Also check out True Car. They should give you an idea of what people are actually paying in your area. If you have found roughly the car you want, then start emailing internet sales managers for your area. You can cut all the crap about haggling out and get to the best price a lot faster.

I also bought a little notebook with a page for each dealer and their info. I have emailed nine and have three quotes so far. The ones from true car and others I looked up and called to get email addresses.
So far the best OTD is 21441.
Next is 21479
Last is 20569 without TTL
I also asked for breakdown of TTL to compare taxes and to see if DMV fees are the same.

That's like something I would do.
