Guess who dreamed she won some sort of contest and got to go to a tasting with Guy himself? He made pork and chicken broth with margaritas (

i got up this morning and took the car to a friend's shop, where i got 2 new tires (among other things) last Saturday. the CEL wasn't blinking, but about 10 miles into the drive it did start blinking and the engine started chugging again. i made it to his shop and he confirmed what i thought - misfiring cylinders. he hooked up that little machine to see what the codes were, and it said Misfiring on Cylinder #3. yay and stuff.
so i drove the car 2 more miles to the Honda dealership, and was informed that it would be Monday before they could even diagnose the car. they didn't have any loaner vehicles. i hitch a ride to the car rental place only to find out they have one vehicle left - a Kia Sorrento (5-door SUV) that costs $64/day. i hand over the credit card and sign myself up for 3 days, since it'll be Monday before they even look at my car.
a couple hours ago, Honda called. they took a look at my car...even though they said they didn't have time to do it today because they were overbooked and understaffed. she said the oil dipstick was DRY, so my car had less than 2 quarts of oil in it. she didn't know why the oil light hadn't come on to alert me that i had low oil. so they went ahead and gave it an oil change (and a dealership oil change costs what, $70?). she says the car is fine and ready to go.
so then i asked about the misfiring cylinders. she said the CEL wasn't blinking at all, and it hadn't blinked the whole time they'd had it. she said if it was blinking, then it was because of the low oil. the engine was chugging because of low oil. i said i saw the code myself on the little machine just 10 minutes before i went to Honda, and she said they didn't see any codes when they checked. i tell her again that it is definitely a misfiring cylinder, and they definitely need to check on that, because i know what i saw on the machine thingy and i know that my car has had this problem before with misfiring cylinders.
she called me back and said 3 of the spark plugs were bad, just 3 of them on one side. the plugs on the other side were fine. spark plugs aren't covered under extended warranty because they're considered general maintenance items. so on Monday, they're going to replace 3 spark plugs (at dealership costs) and i will get my car back. hopefully i'll get it back in time to return the rental car and only get charged for 2 day's rental instead of 3.
here's the thing. how do the plugs on just one side go bad? why did she tell me it was because of the low oil, when a friend of mine said that spark plugs have nothing to do with the oil? i don't know a damn thing about cars and i can't stand having to get work done and not knowing what i'm getting!
As far as not alerting you that the oil was low, they should definitely either test or replace your oil pressure sender.
Sigh. Blargh.
I don't have a deep socket 16mm, but a 5/8" 12 point deep socket worked well enough, I put it on the special tool to crank the sunroof back by hand. It worked. Then I started the car, and it turns out the switch does work, it's just backwards from how I thought, and you have to press it pretty firmly on the other side to get it to open. It probably still needs to be greased, because it doesn't move smoothly when closing, it will go for an inch or two, then you have to release/press the switch again, until it's about half-way closed, then it goes fairly smoothly. Could also be worn teeth on the cable, but apparently you can just pull it out and flip it to the other side, because the motor only contacts one side of the cable at a time, but the cable has grooves all the way around.
Broke out the multimeter, and it seems my oil pressure sender does indeed work. I have a rough idea of what signal it puts out now, so I can go about finding an appropriate aftermarket gauge (will cost a fraction of what it would to update/modify my instrument cluster from a mechanical to electrical sender)
Also pulled out my wiper fluid bottle and put RTV around the grommet since that seems to be where all the fluid leaks out from.
