Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about auto-tip

An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.

Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.

The female pastor has also has written a 28-page volume examines spiritual nourishment, complete with references to candy and junk food. The $10 paperback is titled "Watch the Hand that Feeds You." From her size, it appears she doesn't like to follows her own advice.

A customer's name can be construed as private information. You can just as easily argue against it. I'm just saying that from a security/public relations standpoint, I side with what Applebees did. Dontknow

based on the response seen on Applebee's facebook, twitter, and news story pages, I think they've only succeeded in running off customers. Their company policy regarding this is vague at best.

if you want to or not tip that is your business. waitresses should not be surprised, assume they have to deal with this on a semi reg.basis

id call BS on the pastor giving 10%, they prob rob the church, oh wait, it's their pay to serve and "help" others

I don't see how a name is private information. Names are freely available just about everywhere.

I don't see why. I doubt anyone would care or give it so much as a second glance.

What is someone going to do with your signature? It's useless without any other information.

I doubt she was surprised at the lack of tip - any server at some point or another will be stiffed. Just look at all the people in this thread complaining having to tip servers at all - you think some of them haven't stiffed a server a time or two before? laugh out loud I think it was the really snarky and completely uncalled-for note written on the receipt that she found surprising.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people out there who could wreak plenty of havoc with a name & a signature. Since you know the town & state of the applebees, you could probably easily find the person's address online. From there it wouldn't be hard to counterfeit checks...

Counterfeiting checks without a bank and routing number? And who would waste their time counterfeiting personal checks? If you're good enough to counterfeit on that kind of level, personal checks would be pretty small potatoes.
