APC Battery Backup makes loud high pitched noise all of a sudden

11,875 2,026 March 2, 2013 at 01:07 PM
This has happened multiple times. I'm watching TV and all of a sudden the APC unit will make this constant, loud, high-pitched noise. Nothing turns off as if the unit failed or something but the noise is unbearable. I turn off my TV and HTPC and then turn off the APC unit for about a minute, turn it back on, and the noise is gone. It isn't really that frequent but has happened at least three times. What is the issue?

also, lead batteries like to stay topped off else they crystalize which prevents them from holding a charge, so keep a UPS plugged in all the time.

I was going by this person's quote saying I needed two batteries for my one unit.
That link is for batteries for the APC Powerstack 450VA unit. You have a BE450G (per your image) which runs on a single battery (RBC 114).

the green power light will blink between green and red when the noise happens.
But you didn't see any Overload or Replace Battery lights on solid? Is the TV plugged into the battery side or the surge side? Same goes for the computer. I won't necessarily assume each are plugged into the battery side.

Yes both TV and computer are on battery side.

Not running the APC software on the HTPC? You can set the system to automatically shut down on power loss. If the UPS can't handle all of the devices hooked up to it, then you basically have a really expensive surge protector.

Is the noise like the brief beep that APC backups make when turned on or off, only it warbles rapidly to make it more annoying? That's usually a warning that the battery is weak and has to be replaced, especially if it's preceded by a relay click and maybe also a hum that indicate the APC is performing a load test.

On my APCs (350VA or less) the load test is done a few seconds after turn-on and every several hours thereafter. The test load is less than 1/2 amp and 10 seconds, which I suspect is too little or too brief to check the battery adequately because I've had old batteries pass that test but last only 30 seconds during blackouts.

Try measuring the battery outside the backup unit, while the AC power cord is unplugged (IMPORTANT) and the battery disconnected. Briefly apply a load of approximately 10 ohms (12V car tail light battery works) while measuring voltage. If it goes way below 12V, like 10V, one of the 6 cells is probably bad, meaning the battery has to be replace.

What the heck is an APC?
Is that a brand or something?
APC makes some of the best UPS out there for consumers and enterprise. They also are very well known in the data center world. I have several APC racks as well as more APC rack mount power strips than I can count. They do a whole lot more too.

Use this link http://www.apc.com/site/support/i...ty-status/ to check your warranty status. APC has pretty good customer service. Use your SD skills and they may offer you a rebate towards your next purchase.

It's a solid, high-pitched noise...not really a beep at all.

Says this

"Your APC Back-UPS 450 (be450g) comes standard with a 3 years repair or replace factory warranty. The warranty is effective from the date of purchase. In the event that you are not able to locate a dated proof of purchase receipt, your warranty is effective from the product's manufacture date. Your product was manufactured on October 7, 2010."

So I'm good until at least October 2013. Will they replace it if it's just the battery or is the battery part of the warranty? Once I got to that warranty info there was nothing else to do except a link that said "back". How do I apply for a warranty?

Not a beep, a warble and one modulated at a fast 5-10 hertz, causing the sound to seem almost constant. But even a pure tone can indicate a bad battery.
