Bad Situation....

So I went to a car dealership to look at a Mitsubishi Eclipse I'm interested in. I took it for a test drive and was convinced to put down a deposit for the price they were giving it to me for. I asked if I could get a refund if it falls through (they don't offer financing, full cash only). They said yes and go back and forth telling me "congrats on your car!". "I'm like dafuq?" I signed a purchase contract that stated a deposit is non-refundable yet the dealer told me I could if worse comes to worse. Even the manager came up to me and said if need be, we can refund it. Bad situation. Am I SOL?

The purchase contract only had the $500 deposit on it. I got the managers word that I could get a refund.
So it looks to me that you just learned a $500 lesson...one that you'll hopefully not do again.
Hopefully.

Because this is a sports car, get back your deposit, especially if it's a used sports car. My wife drives a car that actually is a sports car (accelerates slightly faster than a V-6 Eclipse), only insurance companies don't think so, and it can carry 4 people comfortably plus cargo.
I'm being serious.

That's actually quite a sweet ride. I may need to seek out a deal!

They might refund your deposit, but be prepared to sit in the dealership for 4 hours while they pressure you to complete the sale.
That's the same reason they ask for your license. It's legit to make a copy of it, but they often hold it because they know you aren't walking out without your driver's license.
They do pretty much every trick in the book to force you to sit there and try and wear you out, because that increases your chance of buying the car.
Again, you might be able to get your deposit back if you ask, but be prepared for a fight.
Also, the salesman might deny that he said the deposit was refundable, and that you signed the purchase agreement.
In the future, don't put a deposit on something until you are 100% sure you are buying it.
That's the entire point of a deposit.. it's a small commitment by the buyer for the seller to hold it.
If it's refundable, what's the point?

I deliberately told him I wouldn't be able to complete the deal unless I sold my car privately first. I have his business card.
That changes everything!
